As such, you'll find a tough design and a laptop that's more than capable of handling the daily commute. Overall, the Toshiba Satellite Pro A300- 2C5 is an impressive laptop. Offering a great mix of quality, comfort and performance, it's the ideal tool for busy professionals, with only a below-average battery life letting it down.

Overall, there's a lot to like about the Toshiba Satellite A300-15B, not least the sublimely comfortable keyboard. It's a great multimedia laptop if you plan on using it around the house, only missing out on an award by virtue of it's woefully short battery life.

Reasonably While it’s difficult to wholeheartedly recommend the A300D-15B, there’s a lot to like about this machine. Best of all is its multimedia performance – and at this price you’ll struggle to find better 3D capabilities. We were also very impressed with the keyboard, at least in terms of comfort and usability. The glossy finish won’t appeal to all users though, prone as it is to scratches and grubby prints. Overall, the fact this machine has an AMD chip isn’t really an issue. For lots of people, the battery life of around 1.5 hours will be – but if you only need a laptop for use around the house then the Toshiba is definitely worth a look.

Toshiba's Satellite A300D-15B mid-range laptop ships with an etail price of £620 and is based around AMD's Turion X2 Ultra processor and discrete Mobility Radeon HD 3650 512MB graphics card.

Tipping the scales at almost 3kg, the good-looking laptop has an excellent 15.4in WXGA+ (1,440x900px) screen, decent gaming credentials, above-average multimedia features, and, surprisingly, room-filling sound. The downsides, however, are more numerous. A mock carbon fibre-like finishes smudges way too easily, the Turion X2 Ultra CPU is found wanting when compared to Centrino (2), the glossy keyboard is hard to write quickly upon, and the battery-life is poor, not helped by the small-capacity battery. Equally as irksome is the first-instance loading/configuring time for Windows Vista, which amounts to some 40 minutes.

The Toshiba Satellite A300-177 is an average 15.4in laptop with a slightly below average screen and battery life, while the unique design is at best an acquired taste. Overall it's not a bad machine, but for just a little extra the competition offers far more. The one area where it excels is in offering the best sound quality of any budget 15 incher we've come across, thanks to its truly excellent Harman Kardon speakers.

The Toshiba Satellite A300-177 is an attractive notebook and on that level, Toshiba has succeeded. However, we do feel the high-gloss finish is a little too much to live with every day. If you can overcome the finish, this is a good all-round machine that offers genuine value for money.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: The Hd 3650 is a middle class graphics card (in 2008) and compareable to an 8600M GT GPU from Nvidia. It is fabricated in 55nm process and due to Avivo video engine the graphic card can support the processor with several video operations (HD video too).

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
