Samsung unleashes industry's first LPDDR5X DRAM

Built using the 14 nm technology, Samsung's first 16 Gb LPDDR5X memory chips promise to drive further growth beyond the mobile sector, also targeting 5G and AI applications, as well as the metaverse. The new 16 Gb LPDDR5X comes three years after Samsung introduced the industry's first 8 Gb LPDDR5 modules.

Samsung is back with a new "industry's first" in the memory field, this time with the release of its first 14 nm-based 16 Gb LPDDR5X modules, which the company describes as "designed to drive further growth throughout the high-speed data service applications including 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse."

According to SangJoon Hwang, Senior Vice President and Head of the DRAM Design Team at Samsung Electronics, "Our LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles."

Compared to the existing LPDDR5 solutions, this brand-new one promises 1.3X processing speeds for a solid power consumption saving of almost 20 percent. As mentioned by Samsung, the speeds of the LPDDR5X DRAM can hit 8.5 Gbps and the 16 Gb LPDDR5X chips can be used in packages of up to 64 GB.

There is no information available on the first devices that will take advantage of the new memory chips yet. However, Samsung reveals that global chipset manufacturers will join them in the effort "to establish a more viable framework for the expanding world of digital reality, with its LPDDR5X serving as a key part of that foundation" later this year.
