Before AMD revealed the RDNA 3 architecture, there were widespread rumors of RDNA 3 GPUs reaching >3 GHz clock speeds. But the actual boost frequencies of the RX 7900 XT and the RX 7900 XTX are considerably below 3 GHz. The latest rumors from RedGamingTech claim that AMD may launch a revised Navi 31 GPU inside new RX 7900 series cards that could breach the 3 GHz clock speed barrier.

AMD took the wraps off its RDNA 3 graphics architecture by announcing the RX 7900 XT and the RX 7900 XTX on November 3. The GPUs are scheduled to go on sale starting December 13 at US$899 and US$999 respectively. While many were hoping that Team Red would bring the fight to Nvidia’s top-of-the-line RTX 4090 at a substantially lower price, the company’s flagship RX 7900 XTX appears to be a competitor to the RTX 4080.

So, AMD enthusiasts must wait for a true RDNA 3 RTX 4090 rival. If the newest leaks from Paul of RedGamingTech are true, AMD could be preparing just that with up to three new RX 7900 models with higher clocks and, possibly, the 3D V-Cache.

According to Paul, AMD could retape the Navi 31 chip to fix clock speed issues that are allegedly preventing the RX 7900 XT and the RX 7900 XTX from reaching 3 GHz at lower power usage. The new RDNA 3 cards featuring the refreshed Navi 31 GPU possibly include the RX 7950 XT, the RX 7950 XTX, and the RX 7990 XTX.

RX 7990 XTX

First, the RX 7990 XTX will reportedly feature 96 RDNA 3 Compute Units (CUs) with boost clocks ranging from 3.3 GHz to 3.6 GHz. The card is expected to pack 24 GB of VRAM, a 384-bit bus, and a memory speed of 24 Gbps. The leaker thinks that, with 192 MB of Infinity Cache, the RX 7990 XTX will be the only RDNA 3 SKU to employ 3D V-Cache. Finally, the RX 7990 XTX will allegedly have a 405 W TBP.

For comparison's sake, the RX 7900 XTX has the same number of CUs and VRAM, but the card can only boost to 2.5 GHz and has 96 MB of Infinity Cache at 355 W TBP. So if the RX 7990 XTX materializes, we can expect a notable performance bump vs the RX 7900 XTX based on the clock speed improvements alone.

As for performance targets, Paul suggests that it won’t be surprising if the refreshed Navi 31 beats the RTX 4090 and even the RTX 4090 Ti if Nvidia has planned such a board for the future.

It is pertinent to mention that the RTX 4090 has only been on the market for less than two months, so it may be too early to talk about a possible RTX 4090 Ti. Therefore, take the rumor with a giant grain of salt.

RX 7950 XTX

Moving on to the Radeon RX 7950 XTX, the leaker suggests that the board will share the CU count, VRAM, bus width, and memory speed with the RX 7990 XTX. The major difference between the two GPUs could be the reduced 3 to 3.3 GHz clock frequency of the RX 7950 XTX, 96 MB Infinity Cache vs 196 MB of the RX 7990 XTX and a considerably lower 355 W TBP.

RX 7950 XT

The rumored specifications of the RX 7950 XT are almost identical to the RX 7900 XT but with increased clock speeds. The RX 7950 XT will presumable have 84 CUs, 20 GB VRAM, a 320-bit wide bus operating at a speed of 20 Gbps, 80 MB of Infinity Cache, and a TBP of 300 W. The clock speeds will allegedly see a bump and could lie between 2.6-2.7 GHz and 3 GHz.

Finally, Paul thinks that AMD may release the RX 7990 XTX, the RX 7950 XTX, and the RX 7950 XT in mid-to-late 2023.
