A Redmi Note 5 has supposedly been spotted on Geekbench but listed specifications and details don't conform to anything we expect from the device.

A Redmi Note 5 has been spotted on Geekbench, with performance scores and details that are quite baffling. The Redmi series is Xiaomi's most successful smartphone line, with devices like the Redmi Note 3 and 4 recording global sales figures that compete with the top dogs like the iPhones and Samsung Galaxy flagships. Rumors of the next-gen Redmi Note 5 have been few and far between, though, with most leaks so far being, well, ludicrous. This time, however, a device which is supposed to be the Redmi Note 5 has appeared in a Geekbench listing but details of the listing are certain to have left Mi enthusiasts at a loss.

Here are our gripes:

  • The listing had the SoC as being the MSM8952, which is the Snapdragon 617, a mid-range processor that was released over two years ago. There's no way Xiaomi would make such a move, as it makes zero sense.
  • The SoC was listed as being a hexa-core one, but the Snapdragon 617 is an octa-core proccesor.
  • The actual scores are way beyond anything we've seen from the Snapdragon 617. Double that of the SoC's highest scores, actually.

Thankfully, there's a processor that matches the profile of what's listed: The Snapdragon 650. The 650 is a hexa-core SoC with benchmark scores in the same ballpark as what's seen on this Geekbench listing. There's a high chance this listing is a hoax, with Geekbench being susceptible to manipulation and inaccuracies. The device here may be the Redmi Note 3, a device that was also powered by the Snapdragon 650.

This is just another prank call, we suppose, and information on the Redmi Note 5 remains as inconclusive as before.
