New Nubia device spotted on Geekbench

A new Nubia mid-ranger has been spotted on Geekbench but we're having a hard time figuring out what SoC is listed. Sources claim it is the Snapdragon 617 but a number of factors make that rather unlikely.

Nubia, a sub-brand of ZTE, is known for its exquisitely-designed premium devices, a brand architecture that saw it release the first Android with 8GB of RAM, the Z17. A new Nubia device has been spotted on popular benchmark Geekbench, and it looks to be another upper mid-range entry.

The device, styled "NX591J", was listed as having 6GB of RAM and an octa-core Qualcomm processor clocked at 1.4GHz. There are a number of Qualcomm processors that fit that bill—Snapdragon 425, 430—but most sources claim it's the Snapdragon 617.

It's all a bit iffy, really, as the device's scores—obtained on an outdated version of Geekbench as they may be—are a bit more impressive than what we have listed for that particular SoC. Our Snapdragon 617 averaged a score in the region of 750 on that version of Geekbench but this one gets 1080. That's close to a 50% bump in performance, which is rather doubtful. There's also the fact that the Snapdragon 617 was released eons ago, in 2015.

There's a chance this may be the Z17 Lite but we had that on TENAA a few weeks ago and it was listed with a Snapdragon 625. Both listings show 6GB of RAM, though, so there's that. TENAA listings have proven to be inaccurate in the past, too.

We'll be sure to keep you updated if anything new comes up.
