Motorola slated to launch its first Snapdragon 888-powered smartphone soon

Despite a few slipups here and there, Motorola has still managed to cement its position in the global smartphone market. Its last flagship product, the Moto G100, held its own against similarly-priced alternatives from Xiaomi, Realme, etc. Our in-depth Moto G100 review determined that it could serve as a PC replacement. Now, rumours about its successor called the Moto G200 have shown up online.

Techniknews and Adam Conway have heard from an industry insider that Motorola is working on the Moto G200. Among other things, the high-end smartphone is set to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, 8GB of RAM, and an FHD+ 144Hz screen. It isn't clear if Motorola will opt for an LCD or OLED panel. The latter would be ideal for superior viewing angles and colour accuracy.

Moving on to the cameras, the Moto G200 is slated to feature a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor, along with a 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2MP depth sensor. A 16MP module will handle selfies and video calls. The 8MP wide-angle lens at the front seems to be gone this time around.

The report rounds things off by stating that the Moto G200 could be unveiled in China sometime in November 2021. However, it will be launched under the Motorola Edge 30 moniker, essentially acting as a successor to the Motorola Edge 20 and Edge 20 Pro released earlier last year. There is no word about the Moto G200 global launch just yet, but it'll be at least a few weeks before the phone hits international shores after its China debut.

Under ordinary circumstances, launching a 'flagship' smartphone with a one-generation-old chipset would spell doom for any company. However, the Moto G200 shouldn't have any trouble staying relevant through 2022, given that the Snapdragon 888 is still a powerful piece of silicon. There is, however, one major caveat that could push away prospective buyers. The smartphone will allegedly ship with Android 11 out of the box. That wouldn't be a problem had it not been for Motorola's sub-part software support.
