Microsoft announces massive job cut

Microsoft plans to lay off 18,000 employees during the next 12 months
Microsoft to lay off 18,000 employees
Earlier today, the Redmond giant announced the biggest layoff in the history of the company - about 18,000 jobs will be cut by June 30, 2015.

In an email to the company's employees which he sent earlier today, Satya Nadella made it clear that Microsoft will fire much more people than expected, as over 18,000 employees will have their positions eliminated by the end of June 2015. This is, without any doubt, the biggest layoff in the history of the Redmond giant.

Nadella's email says that "we will begin to reduce the size of our overall workforce by up to 18,000 jobs in the next year. Of that total, our work toward synergies and strategic alignment on Nokia Devices and Services is expected to account for about 12,500 jobs, comprising both professional and factory workers."

This reveals that Microsoft is doing fine overall and most layoffs come as a direct consequence of the Nokia Devices and Services unit purchase and involve former Nokia employees. Unfortunately, a number of older Microsoft employees will be let go as well.

"We are moving now to start reducing the first 13,000 positions, and the vast majority of employees whose jobs will be eliminated will be notified over the next six months." added Microsoft's CEO. Previous rumors indicated that Xbox marketing personnel and software testers may be among those affected by the job cuts but the company did not confirm any such details yet.
