Mercedes EQG: Electric G-Class prototype runs into trouble during test drive on legendary German race track

The German automaker with the world-famous star logo continues to work on its upcoming electric G-Class, also known as the G-Wagon, whose impressive off-road features have already been teased last year. However, a new YouTube video now suggests that the Mercedes EQG might need some additional fine-tuning before its highly anticipated launch later this year.

The corresponding clip has been published on the Carspotter Jeroen channel and shows a partially camouflaged prototype of the electric Mercedes G-Class during a sporty test drive on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany. After the rather chunky electric SUV maneuvered through the corners of a very challenging part of the track, it came to a stop and then backed up behind the safety barrier. The observer first suspected an issue with the battery of the Mercedes EQG.

But upon closer inspection, the Mercedes EQG generated a loud rattling noise that is clearly audible in the aforementioned video. In the end, one can only speculate about the culprit of this unfortunate breakdown. According to InsideEVs, it might be a serious defect or just a stray rock that was caught in the brakes. Either way, it should be noted that the electric Mercedes G-Class was tested under extreme loads on a race track, which does not replicate the much slower wear and tear that would occur during regular driving on public roads. Therefore, this noteworthy incident does not provide any clues about the reliability of the Mercedes EQG production model.
