Core i7-12700H vs. Ryzen 9 5900HS | Intel's Alder Lake is slower than AMD's Cezanne Zen 3 at 45W TDP

Teaser
We are currently getting more laptops with the new Intel Alder Lake processors. A direct comparison is not always easy due to different TDP settings, but the two devices Alienware x14 and the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14 now give us the chance for that - with the better end for AMD.

The brand-new gaming notebook Alienware x14 just arrived with in our office with Intel's new Alder lake CPU generation. During our initial tests, we noticed that there is no increased short-term performance limit and the processor just runs at 45W all the time. This means the behavior is completely different to pretty much every other modern Intel laptop and this fact gives us a great opportunity to compare the new Intel Core i7-12700H with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS in the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14, where the AMD CPU runs at 42 Watts.

The new Core i7-12700H uses 6 performance cores (with Hyperthreading) and 8 efficiency cores, so the i7 can execute up to 20 threads simultaneously in multi-core applications. The Core i9-12900H uses the same number of cores and even though it would be the most suitable contender for the Ryzen 9, the 12900H would not offer a performance advantage over the i7 at the same 45W TDP configuration. On the other side of the competition we have the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS, which can execute 16 threads with its eight cores.

Alienware x14 i7 RTX 3060 Intel Core i7-12700H: Ø1817 (1803.1-1828.74)

The data of the Cinebench Multi loop shows that both processors can maintain their respective TDP values very well (the Ryzen 9 drops a bit during one run, but stabilizes right away) and the Intel CPU consumes 3 Watts more. Despite the higher number of cores, the performance is still lower, which is also the case for most of the other multi-core benchmarks. Intel definitely made advances in terms of efficiency, but was not able to close the gap completely.

We do not want to ignore that Intel managed to increase the single-core performance thanks to the new performance cores and manages an advantage between 10-20% (depending on the benchmark). However, this is a result of the high power consumption. While the Intel Core i7-12700H shows a total consumption of 29W (IA cores: 22W) during single-core tests, the Ryzen 9 5900HS only consumes 18W overall and 14W for the core. This means AMD is still ahead in terms of efficiency and it is also an explanation why Intel only uses up to 6 performance cores in its mobile processors.

We will publish the two reviews of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro and the Alienware x14 in the next couple of days, just like a review of the new Ryzen 6 6900HS.
