Google Pixel Watch to receive software updates "until at least October 2025"
After plenty rumors and official teases, Google finally unveiled the Pixel Watch on October 6. Google’s debut smartwatch runs Wear OS 3.5, the same as the Galaxy Watch 5 series, and will be available to buy on October 13. Google is now sharing more details about the Pixel Watch including the software support timeline of the new smartwatch.
According to Google, the Pixel Watch will receive software updates for at least three years from the first day the device goes on sale in the US. Unlike smartphones, Google isn’t segmenting the updates into feature, OS, and security updates. The software upgrades Google is promising can include features drops as well as security upgrades, OS updates, and bug fixes.
Since the Pixel Watch is going on sale on October 13, the Watch will get updates till October 2025. As a comparison, Samsung has guaranteed the Galaxy Watch 5/Watch 5 Pro, which also runs Wear OS 3.5, will get four years of updates. Apple Watch Series 8, based on Cupertino’s track record with the Watch Series 3, may get up to five years of software support. So, Google appears behind the pack here.
However, one thing that we can expect from Google is consistency and timeliness when it comes to pushing out new updates. For instance, because Google develops Android, Pixel phones get new Android versions before handsets from other companies. Let’s hope the company also follows a similar pattern with the Pixel Watch where the smartwatch gets the latest OS updates as soon as they are ready.
