(Update) Lenovo ThinkPad P52: First pictures and specs of the new Lenovo workstation have been leaked
The market for workstations isn't huge, but not without its prestige. At very high prices, customers expect not only excellent performance, but also a very high quality in general. Mobile workstations are the most expensive & high-end part of the laptop market and they are dominated by the three biggest PC manufacturers. The main players: Dell Precision, HP ZBook and the Lenovo ThinkPad P series.
Since Intel has revealed the first Hexa-Core CPUs for laptops this year, the 2018 generation of mobile workstation is a pretty big deal. After all, it will bring the biggest jump in CPU performance in years. HP has announced its new ZBooks first, Dell followed that up with new Precision workstations are few weeks later. Lenovo on the other hand has been silent, no new P series ThinkPads with Coffee Lake have been announced so far.
This state of affairs is likely to change soon, as it seems to be high-time for an announcement. However, its still unclear when exactly Lenovo will officially reveal the new machines. Today, Notebookcheck came across the first pictures of the upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad P52, which replaces the ThinkPad P51 as the core of Lenovo's workstation portfolio. The leaked pictures, which are coming from a Slovakian Lenovo reseller, show that the ThinkPad P52 will be based on the chassis design of its predecessor.

Some small design-changes are visible in the pictures. The keyboard for example apparently received a small redesign to align its layout with the ThinkPad T580. The keyboard of the ThinkPad P52 is thus slightly less wide compared with the ThinkPad P51, leaving more keyboard-bezel at the sides. Other small changes include the introduction of the "ThinkShutter", the option for an Infrared camera for Windows Hello and a new status-LED for WiFi.
While the pictures do reveal some changes to the outer design, we also found the first informations on the specifications elsewhere: A German reseller has set-up a small teaser-site for the Lenovo ThinkPad P52, which reveals that the ThinkPad P52 will be offered with the Nvidia Quadro P3200. Its predecessor, the ThinkPad P51, offered the Nvidia Quadro M2200 as its most powerful GPU-choice, so the ThinkPad P52 should also offer a significant increase in GPU performance.
Update: In the meantime, another picture has surfaced, which also originates from the Slovakian Lenovo-retailer. This image shows the back of the device, where most of the ports are situated. Here, Lenovo appears to have removed two USB-A ports. Instead, the company has added another Thunderbolt 3 enabled USB-C port. The predecessor ThinkPad P51 only had one such port, so the Lenovo ThinkPad P52 will have two.
