CES 2020 | The NEC Lavie Vega is a thin-and-light 4K laptop aimed at business professionals
NEC, one of Lenovo’s sub-brands, announced the new Lavie Vega, a 4K laptop aimed at business professionals.
The Vega is a portable 15.6-inch laptop. At 4.06 lbs and measuring 14.17 x 9.61 x 0.73 inches, the Vega should easily fit into any business bag. The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i7-9750H, 8 GB of soldered DDR4-2666 RAM (2x 4 GB), and sports a combination of 32 GB Intel Optane memory and 512 GB Intel QLC 3D NAND SSD. Despite the name, graphics are handled by the onboard UHD Graphics 630 GPU.
The 15.6-inch display boasts a 4K resolution. The OLED panel is HDR certified and is rated to 400 nits of brightness.
Port selection is varied and well-tuned for office environments. Along the sides are two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C ports, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a microSD card slot, and a combo headphone/microphone jack. The inclusion of two Thunderbolt 3 ports should make docking the laptop a breeze. Wireless connections are handled by the 802.11ax WiFi card (2x2) and Bluetooth 5.0.
The Vega also has a 720p webcam for video calls and an IR camera that’s compatible with Windows Hello. NEC estimates the laptop will last 8.3 hours on a charge (based on MobileMark 2014) thanks to the 80 Wh battery.
The Lavie laptop has a quad-array microphone setup. The laptop can work as a smart speaker; even when the lid is closed and asleep, Microsoft’s Cortana can pick up voice commands to start apps. NEC gave an example of using the laptop as a smart speaker and pointed to the dual 2 Watt Yamaha-branded speakers for sound output.
The Vega is dressed to kill. The laptop comes in a slick “Alumite Blue” color, which is reminiscent of cobalt. Gorilla Glass 6 covers the back of the lid and has been polished to a mirror finish.
The Lavie Vega will be available in March 2020 starting at US $2099.99.
