A new Samsung design patent for a smartphone with a notched display has surfaced at China’s SIPO patent office. Filed late last month, the new display looks like it offers a similar aspect ratio to Samsung’s current Galaxy S9 devices, but with top and bottom bezels all but eliminated. Given that Samsung manufactures the AMOLED panel found in the iPhone X, it should have plenty of expertise in creating notched displays.
Like many of the iPhone X-like notched Android devices that are currently hitting the market, the notch in question appears smaller, quite likely because it doesn’t house the exotic 3D facial recognition technology found in the iPhone X notch. In this instance, it appears to house a speaker, a front facing camera and what is likely a proximity sensor. If this is a preview to what the Samsung Galaxy S 'X' might look like, it also looks it will retain a 3.5mm audio jack for at least one more generation.
A second patent was also uncovered by the folks at Mobielkopen – on this occasion, the smartphone in question doesn’t have a notch in sight and looks to be completely bezel-less. The sketches show what looks like a Galaxy Note design that could well feature an underscreen fingerprint sensor and quite possibly an underscreen front facing camera, which would make it a lot more interesting from a technology perspective. Time will, of course, tell.
