Phones in the Samsung Galaxy S23 series will apparently not be fitted with under-display camera technology according to an alleged supply chain source. This news fits in neatly with recent reports that the front-facing cameras for the S23 devices will get upgraded. There is a chance that the future Galaxy S24 will sport an under-display camera.

A supposed supply chain source has claimed that there will be no under-display camera (UDC) technology to be found in the Samsung Galaxy S23 series. The information, which comes from the Korean-language blog Naver, makes it clear that as the specifications and parts for the Galaxy S23 devices have already been confirmed, there is no chance of this suddenly changing to accommodate a selfie camera under the panel.

There have been a few sketchy rumors in the past that a model in the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, potentially the S23 Ultra, would sport an under-display camera. Commenters shared fan-made concept renderings of the S23 Ultra with an unblemished screen, and even the noted leaker Ice universe teased that the “Galaxy S23” could be UDC ready by tweeting a series of tweaked images showing phones with no notch or punch-hole at the front.

However, it has been recently reported that the selfie cameras for the Galaxy S23 smartphones will receive some updates, so while UDC technology is off the table now, it’s not all bad news for Samsung fans. It has been opined that the Korean company has made this decision possibly because the technology is not quite up to par for devices that could sell in their millions, despite the Galaxy Z Fold3 being an under-display camera phone.

In addition, it would be a great risk for Samsung to ship hundreds of thousands of Galaxy S23 phones just to have a multitude of complaints about substandard under-display camera performance, so it would be wise to continue testing and waiting until a better solution is ready for mass production. The same source suggests this could happen with the Galaxy S24 series, as this would offer Samsung enough time to perfect its UDC equipment.
