Notebookcheck's Top 10 Laptops under 1,000 Euros

Florian Wimmer (translated by Andreas Osthoff), 07/03/2017

September 2018 update. Here you will find the best notebooks under 1000 USD/Euros reviewed by Notebookcheck over the last few months. Our list of top models is regularly updated, maintained and commented on and should assist in purchasing decisions.

The range between 500 and 1000 USD/Euros probably includes the largest selection of notebooks, starting with business devices and multimedia machines with different sizes up to compact and mobile subnotebooks and obviously the popular class of convertibles or 2-in-1 devices, respectively. If you want to find your favorite device very quickly and you are not limited to a special type of device, then this overview might be of help. Otherwise, we can recommend our category charts:

The following table lists the best Windows-based notebooks under 1000 USD/Euros (>10-inches, no Chromebooks) that were reviewed by Notebookcheck over the last 10 months. If ratings are equal, the latest review is listed first. The table can be sorted by clicking on its headers and filtered by entering text in the field above it (e.g. "matte").

Note: The cheapest street price at the time of the last revision of this article applies to the following list. The sales prices shown in the following table and in the price comparison with the individual articles are automatically updated daily and can therefore differ!

Editors' Comments

1st – Microsoft Surface Pro (2017)

Microsoft Surface Pro (2017)
Microsoft Surface Pro (2017)

The newest Microsoft Surface Pro variant does no longer carry a version number, but is referred to by year. A cheap 2017 variant with Core m processor is available for significantly under 1000 Euros. It is a great bundle: high-end build quality and a Wi-Fi battery runtime of above 11 hours convey a great deal. Moreover, its very good display and silent operation are big advantages. The system performance is sufficient for everyday tasks. The glossy display and the lack of a USB-C port are slightly disappointing. Nevertheless, the Surface Pro (2017) is a very good convertible which hardly shows serious weaknesses.

2nd - Lenovo ThinkPad E480

Lenovo ThinkPad E480
Lenovo ThinkPad E480

Lenovo's ThinkPad E480 offers a great price-performance ratio. The 14-inch screen is the entry into the ThinkPad line-up for less than 800 Euros, but still features some of the features you will find on the much more expensive ThinkPads. This includes the sturdy case, great input devices, and the matte IPS screen. However, you should avoid SKUs with the Radeon GPU, because they have temperature problems under load. There are still some drawbacks for the more affordable systems: The warranty is short, you only get a microSD reader, and the write performance of the SSD is quite slow. If this is no problem, you will get a great business laptop for a small price.

3rd - Lenovo ThinkPad L380

Lenovo ThinkPad L380
Lenovo ThinkPad L380

ThinkPads everywhere: Lenovo continuously expands its ThinkPad line-up, so there is a device for pretty much every taste and price range. The ThinkPad L380 is a really solid 13-inch device, which does not cost more than 1000 Euros, but still manages good performance figures and pretty long battery runtimes. The easy maintenance and fast SSD complete the package, but you will have to live with a somewhat dark screen with narrow color gamut, so the ThinkPad L380 is not a good choice for photographers. The ThinkPad also lacks some business features, even though this is not necessarily a problem for private users.

4th - Lenovo ThinkPad L480

Lenovo ThinkPad L480
Lenovo ThinkPad L480

Similar to its modern siblings, the ThinkPad L480 does not feature a full-size SD reader, but only a microSD module. Our test model just misses the 1000 Euros mark, and the price dropped a bit since then. You get a slim, light, and fast laptops with good Wi-Fi transfer rates and a matte IPS display. The latter lacks some luminance though, and the competition manages longer battery runtimes. The ThinkPad E480 offers a slighly slimmer chassis, but the ThinkPad L480 is a bit lighter.

5th - Lenovo ThinkPad E580

Lenovo ThinkPad E580
Lenovo ThinkPad E580

Hot stuff: Lenovo's 2018 ThinkPad E480 gets really warm under load and the larger sibling is not much better. The CPU clock also drops quickly under load; the temperature management of the inexpensive ThinkPad is not very good. In return you get a good chassis, a great keyboard, and a matte display. It is also possible to upgrade the notebook quite comprehensively if desired. The ThinkPad E580 features some of the qualities of the more expensive siblings for a low price, so the device gets a high rating. You have to make compromises in terms of temperature development and the battery runtime though.

6th – HP ProBook 470 G5

HP ProBook 470 G5
HP ProBook 470 G5

We had a hard time finding any serious flaws in our review of the HP ProBook 470 G5: The display could have a higher contrast, the warranty is limited to just one year, and there is no Thunderbolt port. That's about it though, and the matte panel, excellent keyboard, long battery runtime, and low temperatures easily compensate for that. This is a really good office device if you are looking for a 17.3-inch system and do not mind the weight of 2.5 kg. The Core i5 processor is powerful enough even for more demanding tasks. Gaming is not really possible, despite the dedicated GPU, because the GeForce 930MX is not really powerful.

7th – Toshiba Portégé A30 D

Toshiba Portégé A30 D
Toshiba Portégé A30 D

With the Portégé A30 D, Toshiba offers a 13-inch office notebook, which can either be seen as a light and compact notebook or a quite heavy and slightly bulky subnotebook. Those who do not expect record breaking size and weight will get a mobile companion with docking port and many security features. Moreover, the case is quite solid.

An easily replaceable battery and silent operation are advantages which not every device of this category delivers. However, our test model also had flaws, which we do not want to conceal: The touchpad did sometimes not work flawlessly, the sound system is sub-par, and the SSD has a low capacity and delivers poor write rates. It might be that we got hold of a rogue device. Anyway, prospective buyers should try the notebook before purchase.

8th - Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga

Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga
Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga

Lenovo's ThinkPad L380 Yoga is supposed to be a well-made convertible for less than a 1000 Euros. The result is a success, but the less stable base unit could become an issue since you open or close a convertible more often. Business features like a WWAN module are missing, but you can upgrade the RAM, which is very rare for a convertible. The system is usually very quiet and cool, and you get excellent input devices. We also like the display, so the ThinkPad L380 Yoga is definitely worth a look.

9th - Dell Latitude 5590

Dell Latitude 5590
Dell Latitude 5590

The Dell Latitude 5590 is a good 15-inch business laptop: A sophisticated keyboard, easy maintenance, matte IPS display, and a fast processor are just some of the highlights. You can customize the hardware based on your requirements, but this can quickly increase the price to more than 1000 Euros. The display should be brighter and avoid PWM, the WLAN could be faster and the power consumption could be lower.

All in all, the Dell Latitude 5590 is a solid choice with plenty of performance for daily tasks.
