NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M vs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M vs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M SLI

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M

► remove from comparison

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M is a high-end laptop graphics card introduced in June 2011. It is based on the GF114 core, which is related to the Fermi architecture. Therefore, it supports DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0. The faster GeForce GTX 580M, in comparison, is based on the same chip, but with all shaders enabled.

GF114 architecture

The GF114 core is a power optimized version of the GF104 (used in the GTX 470M) but with no architectural changes. Therefore, the performance per MHz stays the same, but Nvidia was able to clock the shaders higher while still remaining in the same power envelope. The GTX 570M offers 336 cores of the 384 in the GF114. More informations on the similar GF104 architecture can be found on the GeForce GTX 485M page.

Performance

Due to the higher clock speeds and the larger shader count, the GeForce GTX 570M is clearly faster than the old GeForce GTX 470M. Since the GPU is a high-end card, the performance is similar to the AMD Radeon HD 6970M. Compared to the other GTX 500M cards, the GTX 570M is positioned nearer to the GTX 560M (-15%) than the GTX 580M (+35%) in our gaming tests. Current games as of 2011 should therefore run fluently in Full HD resolution and high details. Only some very demanding games, such as Metro 2033 or Crysis 2, may need reduced graphical settings for smoother gameplay.

Features

Similar to the older GF104 chip, the GF114 supports Bitstream HD Audio (Blu-Ray) output via HDMI. This means it can transfer, for example, Dolby True HD or DTS-HD bitstream-wise without quality loss to a HiFi receiver.

The GTX 570M offers the PureVideo HD technology for video decoding. The included Video Processor 4 (VP4) supports feature set C and therefore the GPU is able to fully decode MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2 (MPEG-4 ASP - e.g., DivX or Xvid), VC-1/WMV9, and H.264 (VLD, IDCT, Motion Compensation, and Deblocking).

Furthermore, the GPU is able to decode two 1080p streams simultaneously (e.g., Blu-Ray Picture-in-Picture).

Through CUDA, OpenCL, and DirectCompute 2.1 support, the GeForce GTX 570M can be used for general calculations. For example, the stream processor can encode videos considerably faster than can many modern CPUs. Furthermore, physics calculations can be done by the GPU using PhysX if supported (e.g., in Mafia 2 or Metro 2033).

3D Vision enables the laptop to send 3D content (3D games, 3D Web Streaming, 3D photos, 3D Blu-Rays) to a built-in 3D enabled screen or an external 3D TV if supported by the laptop manufacturer.

The power consumption of the GeForce GTX 570M is in the same ballpark as the old GTX 470M, which is rumored to be about 75 Watt (TDP including the MXM board and memory). Without load, the chip is clocked at 50/100 MHz (chip/shader) and 200/400 MHz in 2D and 3D mode, respectively, to save power. Furthermore, the 500M series supports Optimus to automatically switch between the integrated graphics card from Intel and the Nvidia GPU. Whether or not a laptop includes this feature is dependent on the manufacturer.

The similarly named desktop GeForce GTX 570 is based on the GF110 chip and offers 480 shader cores and faster clock speeds. As a result, it is significantly faster than the GeForce GTX 570M. Instead, the 570M is more comparable to the desktop GTX 550Ti / 560 in terms of performance.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

► remove from comparison NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M is a high-end laptop graphics card that was announced at Computex 2011. It is based on the new GF116 core as part of the Fermi architecture. Therefore, it supports DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0. Compared to its predecessor, the GeForce GTX 460M, the 560M offers higher clock speeds without a large increase in power demand.

The GF116 core is essentially an optimized GF106 core with the same features. The chip offers 192 shaders and a 192 Bit memory bus for GDDR5. More details on the GF106 architecture can be found in the GeForce GTX 460M article.

The performance of the GeForce GTX 560M is compareable to the older GeForce GTX 480M. In our tests (see benchmarks below), the GTX 560M was on average 13% faster than the old GTX 460M. As a result, only very demanding games (e.g., Crysis 1, Crysis 2, Dirt 3 and Metro 2033) are not fluently playable at highest settings and Full HD resolution with Anti Aliasing. Most other current and older games can be played with maxed out settings as of 2011. See at the end of this page for detailled gaming benchmarks of many current games.

As the GeForce GTX 460M, the 560M supports Bitstream HD Audio (Blu-Ray) output via HDMI. Similar to the Radeon HD 5850, the GTX 460M can transfer Dolby True HD and DTS-HD bitstream-wise without quality loss to a HiFi receiver.

The GTX560M offers PureVideo HD technology for video decoding. The X500 tester was able to decode the VC-1 encoded Elephants Dream video with about 3-6% CPU load (according to the task manager). The H.264 coded Big Buck Bunny video was played back with 1-3% CPU load (both 1080p videos).

Furthermore, the GPU is able to decode two 1080p streams simultaneously (e.g., Blu-Ray Picture-in-Picture).

Through CUDA, OpenCL and DirectCompute 2.1 support, the GeForce GTX 560M can be of use in general calculations. For example, the stream processor can encode videos considerably faster than can many modern CPUs.

3D Vision enables the laptop to send 3D content (3D games, 3D Web Streaming, 3D photos, 3D Blu-Rays) to a built-in 3D-enabled screen or an external 3D TV if supported by the laptop manufacturer.

The power consumption of the GeForce GTX 560M should be about 75 Watt (TDP including the MXM board and memory), which is about the same level of the Mobility Radeon HD 5850 - 5870. If not under load, the chip is clocked at 50/100 MHz (chip/shader) and 200/400 MHz in 2D mode and 3D mode, respectively, to save power. Furthermore, the 500M series supports Optimus to automatically switch between the integrated graphics card from Intel and the Nvidia GPU. However, whether this feature is included or not is dependent on the notebook manufacturer.

The similarly named desktop GeForce GTX 560Ti is based on the GF114 chip and offers more shader cores and significantly higher performance than the GTX 560M. The GTX 550Ti is based on the GF116 and is closer to the 560M in terms of performance, but it still features relatively higher clock speeds. Therefore, the performance of the 560M is more on par with the older desktop GeForce GTS 450.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M SLI

► remove from comparison

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M SLI is a high-end graphics solution for laptops based on the two GTX 580M graphic cards in SLI mode. With SLI, each card usually renders a single frame (AFR mode). Therefore, it may suffer from micro stuttering in low fps ranges of 30fps. This happens because of different timespans between two frames (e.g., irregular delays between sequential frames).

The GeForce GTX 580M SLI supports the same features as a single GTX 580M card. Therefore, it supports DirectX 11 and is produced in a 40nm fabrication process at TSMC.

GF114 architecture

The GF114 core is a power-optimized version of the GF104 (used in the GTX 485M), but with no architectural changes. Therefore, the performance per MHz stays the same. Nvidia, however, was able to clock the shaders higher while still remaining in the same power envelope. The GTX 580M offers all 384 shader cores in the GF114. More information on the similar GF104 architecture can be found on the GeForce GTX 485M page.

Performance

Due to the higher clock speeds, the GeForce GTX 580M SLI is faster than the GTX 485M SLI which was the fastest mobile graphics solution at the time. All current demanding games (2011) like Crysis 2, Witcher 2, Dirt 3 or even Metro 2033 can be played in 1920x1080 with maximum details and most Antialiasing features enabled.

Features

Similar to the older GF104 chip, the GF114 also supports Bitstream HD Audio (Blu-Ray) output via HDMI. That means it can transfer, for example, Dolby True HD or DTS-HD bitstream without quality loss to a HiFi receiver.

The GTX 580M offers the PureVideo HD technology for video decoding. The included Video Processor 4 (VP4) supports feature set C and is therefore able to fully decode MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2 (MPEG-4 ASP - e.g., DivX or Xvid), VC-1/WMV9, and H.264 (VLD, IDCT, Motion Compensation, and Deblocking).

Furthermore, the GPU is able to decode two 1080p streams simultaneously (e.g. for Blu-Ray Picture-in-Picture).

Through CUDA, OpenCL, and DirectCompute 2.1 support, the GeForce GTX 580M can be of help in general calculations. For example, the stream processor can encode videos considerably faster than can a fast CPU. Furthermore, physics calculations can be done by the GPU using PhysX (e.g., supported by Mafia 2 or Metro 2033). As two 580M are used for the SLI combination, one card alone can be used for PhysX and the other for rendering the game graphics.

3D Vision enables the laptop to send 3D content (3D games, 3D Web Streaming, 3D photos, 3D Blu-Rays) to a built-in 3D enabled screen or an external 3D TV (only if supported by the laptop manufacturer).

The power consumption of the GeForce GTX 580M is in the same region as the old GTX 485M, which is supposedly about 100 Watt (TDP including the MXM board and memory). Therefore, the SLI system needs up to 200 Watt using both cards. Without load, the performance is clocked at 50/100 MHz (chip/shader) in 2D mode and 200/400 in 3D mode to save power. Furthermore, a single card can be deactivated to save power.

The similar desktop GeForce GTX 580 is based on the GF110 chip and much faster in comparison. Therefore, the 580M is more closely related to the GeForce GTX 560Ti, the latter of which is still faster due to higher clock speeds.
