The Exynos 990 on the Samsung Galaxy S20 has failed just about every test it's been presented with and that trend continues. In a gaming comparison video versus the MediaTek Helio G90T-powered Redmi Note 8 Pro, the Exynos 990-powered Galaxy S20 proves yet again that it shouldn't be an option for smartphone gamers.

The Exynos 990 on the Samsung Galaxy S20 phones is a known quantity at this point. The in-house Samsung SoC has come under fire for failing to deliver competitive performance and efficiency, even when compared to last year's Snapdragon 855. That isn't even as bad as it gets apparently, as the Exynos 990 also fails to keep up with the MediaTek Helio G90T on the mid-range Redmi Note 8 Pro.

In a video published by Chong Liu, the source of previous comparison videos and benchmarks, the Exynos 990-powered Galaxy S20+ is shown struggling to match up to the Helio G90T-powered Redmi Note 8 Pro. After 10 minutes of running PUBG Mobile, the Galaxy S20+ was dropping frames to 50 fps, and as low as 40 fps by the 20-minute mark.

Again, the Exynos 990 struggles with throttling and sustained performance. Those have become a theme with the chipset, and this video further shows just how woeful it is. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is a US$200 phone, and it's disgraceful that it offers a better gaming experience than a device that costs five times as much.

While this issue may go a bit deeper than just hardware—driver optimization is also a possible reason—owners of the S20 phones are unlikely to take that as anything more than a flimsy excuse, and they'd be right to do that.
