Dirt 5 Laptop and Desktop Benchmarks

Mud party. Our measurements show that Dirt 5 is longing for a potent graphics card. Read in this article which model it should be for certain settings and resolutions.

Technology

Codemasters is now developing so many racing games that you can quickly lose track of them all. In addition to the F1 and Grid series, there is also the Dirt series, which however receives a new installment rather irregularly. Dirt 5 should - as the name already suggests - appeal to fans of muddy tracks.

Technically, the title cuts quite a fine figure. If you leave out one or two mealy textures or objects with a weak polygon design (spectators), Dirt 5 offers a harmonious overall look. While in older Codemasters games we often criticized the lack of detail at the edge of the track, which had a negative effect on the atmosphere, the fresh offshoot scores with various environmental effects. Be it confetti cannons, waving flags or balloons, just to name a few examples.

The biggest highlight, however, as in most racing games, is the level of detail of the cars. Damage model and environmental influences (raindrops, dirt, etc.) can also convince. In general, the cars are easy to control and produce a powerful sound.

The graphics options of Dirt 5 are neither scarce nor lavish. The corresponding menu offers seven detail settings, which can be changed globally via Image Quality and do not require a restart. Somewhat unusual is the fact that there are three different resolution controls (see screenshots). The graphics menu is rounded off by on/off switches for V-Sync and Dynamic Range. All settings are explained by accompanying text.

However, Codemasters should still take care of a few inconsistencies. In the test we had connection failures every now and then. It's also a pity that Dirt 5 sometimes activates Dynamic Range without being asked, that the game start sometimes takes forever (even on SSDs) and that the resolution modes on 21:9 monitors can be strange or incomplete. Furthermore, the title has a large video memory requirement in higher settings, which we've been seeing recently with more and more titles. Graphics cards with less than 4 GB VRAM break down disproportionately when using the Ultra-Preset - even in Full HD.

Benchmark

Dirt 5 impresses with an integrated benchmark, which is very long for our taste with a duration of three minutes and unfortunately it cannot be aborted. While only the FPS numbers are displayed during the measurement, a more extensive evaluation appears at the end, which for example also contains the minimum FPS values. The game saves the corresponding results as a file in the personal documents folder of Windows.

Results

FHD (1920x1080)

For Dirt 5 it should be at least one graphics card from the midrange segment. 1920x1080 pixels overtaxes entry-level chips such as the GeForce MX330/350 and older all-round GPUs such as the GTX 1050(Ti) even with the medium preset. These settings only run smoothly with a GeForce GTX 1650 or higher with more than 40 FPS. High preset requires a Radeon RX 5500M for Full HD or higher. For the Ultra-Preset you even need a high-end model on the level of the GeForce GTX 1080 or RTX 2070.

Things become even more demanding on QHD displays with 2560x1440 pixels. Here it must be Nvidia's current laptop leader, the GeForce RTX 2080, when using maximum settings.

UHD (3840x2160)

Current mobile GPUs cannot handle a combination of 3840x2160 pixels and Ultra-Preset without jerking. In the desktop segment one should start from a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti to be on the safe side. All in all, we would describe the system demand as a bit exaggerated, if you consider the offered graphics quality (good, but not worthy of reference).
