Exclusive: First 5300M Benchmarks | AMD Radeon RX 5300M takes the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 to the cleaners despite clock and memory constraints

The AMD Radeon RX 5300M seems to be an excellent alternative to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650.
The AMD Radeon RX 5300M seems to be an excellent alternative to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650.
We were provided preliminary 3DMark benchmarks performed on a pre-production laptop powered by the new AMD Radeon RX 5300M mobile GPU, which give us first impressions of how AMD's new entry-level Navi 14 part stacks up against the competition. Although the RX 5300M does suffer a performance setback against the RX 5500M, it does a good job in beating the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 and its Max-Q variant quite convincingly.

The AMD Radeon RX 5300M is the new entry-level GPU in the Navi 14 family. While Apple gets to have an exclusive Pro version of the RX 5300M with a 128-bit memory bus (224 GB/s) and 4 GB VRAM, the rest of the world has to make do with a cut-down 96-bit bus (168 GB/s) and 3 GB VRAM.

We have received some benchmark data performed on a pre-production notebook powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 3750H with Vega 10 graphics and a dedicated Radeon RX 5300M GPU from industry sources. Here are the results of a few 3DMark runs that were performed on this notebook and along with comparisons with other notebooks from our database.

Our sample's RX 5300M is clocked at 1,036 MHz base and 1,445 MHz boost. The base clock is lower than the default value of 1,181 MHz, possibly to help with battery life.

In 3DMark Fire Strike, the RX 5300M managed to score 8,782 points. The GTX 1650 Max-Q in the MSI Prestige 15 A10SC lagged behind by about 19% while the standard GTX 1650 in the Dell G3 15 3590 trailed by about 8%. This is impressive considering that the GTX 1650 has higher clocks and more memory than the RX 5300M. However, the RX 5500M in the MSI Alpha 15 leads the RX 5300M by about 13%.

In 3DMark 11 Performance, the RX 5300M posted a total score of 11,869. The performance gap between the RX 5300M and NVIDIA's GTX 1650 variants is considerably lower this time. The RX 5300M scores about 2% higher than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q and is just a hair's breadth better than a GTX 1650. However, the same cannot be said about the performance deficit between the RX 5300M and the RX 5500M, with the latter having a 12% lead.

The AMD Radeon RX 5300M is Team Red's lowest rung offering in the Navi lineup. The RX 5300M is essentially a gimped RX 5500M, and this could very well be AMD's best possible achievement with Navi 14 in terms of improved power efficiency even if it does come with a performance penalty. That being said, the RX 5300M looks to be an excellent alternative to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 series and will likely be lapped-up by many laptop OEMs in the coming months for introducing affordable yet fairly capable gaming laptops.

We should mention one thing here, though. Synthetics tell only half the story and these scores may not reflect real-world gaming performance. The Radeon RX 5500M performs, on an average, somewhere between the GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q in gaming. Therefore, even though the RX 5300M seems to have outdone the GTX 1650 in synthetics, we would still keep our expectations tempered with respect to games, where we suspect the GTX 1650 could still have an edge thanks to its higher clocks and memory.
