The Intel Core i5-6400T is a frugal quad-core desktop processor based on the Skylake architecture, which was announced in August 2015. The CPU, which is manufactured in a 14 nm process, runs at 2.2-2.8 GHz and does not support Hyperthreading (only 4 threads simultaneously).

Architecture

Intel uses Skylake to replace both Broadwell as well as Haswell and therefore uses one core design for all TDP classes between 4.5-45 Watts. Several improvements of the Skylake architecture include bigger Out-to-Order-Buffer, optimizations for pre-fetching as well as bigger gains by Hyperthreading. However, the changes are small for a "Tock" – a new micro architecture – in general, so the per-MHz performance is only between 5-10 % (compared to Haswell) or less than 5 % higher (compared to Broadwell), respectively.

Performance

Depending on the utilization of Hyperthreading, the performance is roughly on par with the old Core i7-2670QM mobile processor (Sandy Bridge, 2.2-2.8 GHz, Hyperthreading), but sometimes also much higher.

Graphics

Graphics are handled by the integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 with 24 EUs (Execution Units), which is clocked at 350 - 950 MHz. Compared to the HD Graphics 4600 (Haswell, 20 EUs), the performance is increased by around 25 percent. The overall GPU performance is still low-end, so modern games can, if at all, only be played smoothly with low settings.

Power Consumption

Intel specifies the TDP with 35 Watts, so it can also be used in notebooks (although bigger ones).

Der Intel Core i7-6400T ist ein sparsamer Quad-Core Desktop-Prozessor auf Basis der Skylake-Architektur, der im August 2015 vorgestellt wurde. Die in einem 14-Nanometer-Prozess gefertigte CPU taktet mit 2,2 bis 2,8 GHz und bietet kein Hyper-Threading (daher nur 4 Threads parallel).

Architektur

Mit Skylake löst Intel sowohl Broadwell als auch Haswell ab und setzt damit in sämtlichen TDP-Klassen wieder auf ein einheitliches Kerndesign. Zu den diversen Verbesserungen der Skylake-Architektur gehören unter anderem vergrößerte Out-of-Order-Buffer, Optimierungen bei Prefetching und Sprungvorhersage sowie stärkere Zugewinne durch Hyper-Threading. Insgesamt fallen die Änderungen für einen "Tock", das heißt eine neue Mikroarchitektur, jedoch eher klein aus, sodass die Pro-MHz-Leistung nur um etwa 5 bis 10 Prozent (gegenüber Haswell) respektive unter 5 Prozent (gegenüber Broadwell) ansteigt.

Performance

Die Leistung ist je nach dem Nutzen von Hyperthreading in etwa auf dem Niveau eines alten Core i7-2670QM Mobilprozessors (Sandy Bridge, 2,2 - 2,8 GHz, Quad-Core, Hyperthreading) einzuordnen, bei Auslastung weniger Threads jedoch auch deutlich darüber. Ein Core i5-6300HQ für Notebooks rechnet dank seiner höheren Taktrate in etwa 10 Prozent schneller. Dennoch stehen auch für anspruchsvollere Anwendungen und (moderates) Multitasking ausreichende Leistungsreserven bereit.

Grafikeinheit

Für Grafikberechnungen zeigt sich die im Prozessor integrierte Intel HD Graphics 530 mit 24 EUs (Execution Units) verantwortlich, die mit 350 - 950 MHz taktet. Im Vergleich mit der HD Graphics 4600 (Haswell, 20 EUs) ist die Performance um etwa 25 Prozent gestiegen. Dennoch siedelt sich die GPU nur im absoluten Low-End-Bereich an, sodass aktuelle Spiele allenfalls in niedrigen Einstellungen flüssig dargestellt werden.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die TDP wird von Intel mit 35 Watt spezifiziert, wodurch die CPU auch in (größeren) Notebooks eingesetzt werden kann.
