The Xiaomi 15 Ultra now faces stiff competition from more modern flagship cameras such as the Oppo Find X9 Pro and the Vivo X300 Pro, but its successor, which will most likely take after the Xiaomi 17, is likely to be a step ahead of the competition, as leaker Digital Chat Station once again highlights in two Weibo posts.
The first of the two leaks describes a more traditional flagship camera, similar to those now offered by competitors in their Pro models, but with one major exception: the main camera is likely to continue to feature a 1-inch sensor, namely an Omnivision sensor. According to Digital Chat Station, this will not only be larger than those of its competitors but also more dynamic thanks to new LOFIC technology.
This will also enable "stronger in-sensor zoom" at close range, which is supposed to seamlessly bridge the focal length range up to periscope telephoto. Based on a 200 MP sensor (likely Samsung's ISOCELL HPE), this covers several zoom focal lengths using lossless crop zoom, with the magnification described as good and the dynamics of both sensors as very high. Telephoto macro support is also included, according to the leaker. As with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, the Leica camera design is round, so a second display like the one on the Xiaomi 17 Pro is unlikely.
Real optical zoom, multi-spectral sensor, and zoom flash
What the leaker describes in his initial post about the Xiaomi 17 Ultra sounds promising, but not revolutionary. It is not yet entirely clear how what is mentioned in another Weibo post fits in with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra described above. The most likely theory at the moment is that there will be two Xiaomi 17 Ultra models, the high-end variant of which will support a type of external zoom lens that will offer true optical zoom with variable focal lengths.
This is also echoed by Digital Chat Station. This time, he calls the feature an "exclusive physical zoom" that is said to be far ahead of the competition. Two other camera features are also mentioned that Oppo and Vivo already have in the Oppo Find X9 Pro and the Vivo X300 Pro: For the first time, Xiaomi is likely to install a separate color sensor in the form of a multispectral sensor. On the other hand, the zoom flash feature known from the Vivo X300 Pro and Vivo X200 Ultra is likely to be on board, which can adjust the intensity and color temperature to the selected focal length.
