Wi-Fi only Motorola Xyboard now available for pre-order

8.2-inch and 10.1-inch models with 16GB or 32GB versions now available from $399 up to $599, shipments to begin January 18th

Motorola is now accepting pre-orders for the WiFi-only Xyboard tablet.

As the successor to the original Xoom, the 10.1-inch Xyboard was announced last year in November and has been claimed to be lighter and thinner than the Xoom by 10 percent and 33 percent, respectively. Most notably, the announcement lacked any references to Wi-Fi only models. This mimicked the launch of the Xoom last year where a Wi-Fi only model was not officially offered until months later.

The Xoom Xyboard includes a dual-core 1.2GHz OMAP CPU and runs Android Honeycomb out of the box. Two distinct sizes exist, an 8.2-inch model and a 10.1-inch model, each with a 1280x800 resolution display. An Android ICS update is expected to come sometime later this year.

The Wi-Fi Xyboard starts at $399 for the 8.2-inch 16GB SSD, although the larger 10.1-inch 32GB SSD model will cost $200 more. The announcement of these tablets coincides with the recent price drop of the WWAN-equipped Droid Xyboard for Verizon. Either way, the contract-free Xyboards are anticipated to ship on January 18th and may hopefully make an appearance at CES.
