Vizio Android tablet hits the FCC

Teaser
The first tablet from Vizio could be coming soon to store shelves in the U.S., possibly for only $349

Well-known for its aggressively priced HDTV sets in the U.S., the California-based consumer electronics company Vizio is now in the final stages for its first tablet release.

The unnamed Vizio tablet has reportedly reached the FCC for regulation testing under the name VTAB1008. Assuming that the company hasn’t changed the hardware since its announcement at CES, the 8-inch tablet should include a 1024x768 resolution screen, a 1GHz CPU of unknown make, 4GB SSD, microSD, micro USB and HDMI. Most unique will be its IR blaster on the top edge of the tablet, presumably for built-in TV remote functionality with VIzio televisions. Although the device will run Android, it is currently unknown if it will sport Froyo or the more updated Honeycomb at launch.

If Vizio's HDTV business model is of any indication, we can expect a capable low-priced tablet with much of the same hardware and software features as the more expensive competitors. In fact, Engadget claims to have found the tablet in Walmart’s internal system for a suggested retail price of just $349. Official announcements regarding the price and proper release date of the tablet will have to wait, hopefully for only the next few weeks.
