U300s Ultrabook now available for pre-order

Lenovo first Ultrabook pops up for pre-order, only $1,499 model available

Lenovo’s first foray into the Ultrabook market was first announced back in September at the IFA conference in Berlin, but until now there was no way to fork over cash for the 13.3” notebook. However, Lenovo now appears ready to collect your money, as a pre-order page has now gone up for the notebook, though only the higher-end model is currently available.

Far from Intel’s vaunted sub-$1,000 recommendation, the pre-order list price is for $1,499 and nets you a Sandy Bridge Core i7-2677M CPUIntegrated Intel HD Graphics and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. In addition, the 13.3” display comes with a 1366x768 pixel resolution, a 256GB SSD and a 4-cell battery. The U300s is expected to be released in a limited-edition Clementine Orange color, but so far only the Graphite Gray model is available.

In our recent review, the U300s impressed with its elegant design that features a single-piece aluminum chassis along with a glass trackpad. In addition, the Core i5 U300s that we tested managed a solid 5 hours of battery life with WLAN on, but we did run into trouble due to CPU throttling while charging. All in all, however, the U300s appears to be a solid offering from Lenovo, although its ultimate fate will likely depend on the pricing of the lower-end model(s).

Unfortunately, the U300s likely won’t be home for Christmas with Lenovo estimating around 4 weeks for delivery.
