The two 160GB hard drives also offer plenty of storage space for most laptop users. The X200 also supports connection to a, b, g and n wireless networks, features a switch to activate Wireless LAN and a 1.3Mp webcam.
Combining quality, durability and style the Satellite X220 gives more established gaming notebook manufacturers a run for their money. It comes up trumps with its high WorldBench and FEAR scores and is a joy to use. This is topped off by a high resolution 17in screen of exceptional quality alongside a powerful processor and generous hard drive capacity and memory.

Toshiba notebooks have long fallen into two distinct camps: there are those machines for the office worker and then there is the amazing Qosmio line of machines aimed at the high-end multimedia user. However, Toshiba has never played in the gaming end of the notebook market, until now that is. The Toshiba Satellite X200-20s may be the company’s first gaming machine but it takes its styling more from it’s Qosmio line than the likes of rival gamers, such as Dell or Alienware. For instance, while the unit is rather boxy with plenty of depth for the cooling fans to handle the high-end components inside, the look is more sophisticated than the average game machine. The lacquered lid and the placement of the stereo speakers above the keyboard makes this look more like a multimedia machine for the home rather than a gamer in the bedroom.

Satego copy. Beside the Satego X200 gaming series, Toshiba also offers the Satellite X200 series, which does not differ to much from the former at the first glance. There is first-class hardware in a striking case, so, also the Satellite X200 is indeed a gaming notebook. Powerful Intel Core 2 Duo processors and a powerful video cards, like Geforce 8700m GT or 8600m GT SLI, which the reviewed notebook came with, grant excellent gaming performance.

With a sub-£1000 price tag, the X200 offers extremely good performance for the money -- especially when it comes to gaming. It'd be nice if the HD drive was Blu-ray, but the lack of 1080p display is less forgivable and the battery life is pretty appalling.

Toshiba has often set the standard when it comes to multimedia laptops with its Qosmio brand, but it also has other machines that fit the bill. Its Satellite X200-24V (£1399 inc. VAT) features a 17- inch display that’s every bit as impressive as the other machines here, with excellent colour reproduction that helps images appear larger than life. It doesn’t offer the best performance, but the big Toshiba remains a reliable choice for family use. The large size restricts portability, but it’s fast, comfortable and well equipped.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT: The NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT is a DirectX 10 capable video card with 32 Stream Precessors like the 8600M GT, but the core-, shader- and memory clock is higher. Therefore the performance is somewhat above the 8600M GT.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT SLI: Two DirectX 10 medium class GeForce 8600M GT graphic cards combined by SLI. Due to SLI they are 0-60% faster than one single card depending on the game. The performance is sufficient for current games but not sufficient for DirectX 10 detail levels. The graphic chip H.264 offers hardware acceleration for videos.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 GT GPU for laptops. Depending on the used graphic memory and the clock speed, the performance is between the 7600 GT and 7900 GS video card.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T7300: Mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.
T7700: Fastest Merom based Core 2 Duo with 35 Watt. The later Penryn Core 2 Duo are a bit faster at the same clock speed.
T7500:
The Core 2 Duo T7500 is a Merom based Core 2 Duo with 4MB Level 2 Cache. It is positioned in the middle class (in 2009) and performs on par with a modern P7550 or Turion II Ultra M640/M660.
T9300:
The T9300 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and similar to the T9400 but with a lower FSB.

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
3.8 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
4.07 kg:
A laptop in this weight range is a heavyweight that you rarely carry around. This is meant for desktops and the devices tend to score with a large display and high performance and replace desktop devices.
83.53%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
