Electing not to use an Intel Atom processor doesn't exempt you from being called a netbook. I've seen netbook systems show up with AMD and VIA processors and even ones that run on different platforms (i.e., Nvidia's Ion). In the end, though, it's no different than a netbook if it's as small and as inexpensive as one. Despite what the processor model says, the Toshiba Satellite T115-S1105 is an oversized netbook that is both speedy and energy efficient, but the user experience needs work.

This review could keep going, but the point is this: Toshiba’s T115 is a good computer and a viable netbook alternative, but it’s not the best in its class. People who like the size but don’t need the battery life will be better served with the more powerful HP Mini 311, while Acer’s Aspire 1410 is a better choice in the CULV category. The T115 falls into the category of “good but not good enough” thanks to slow boot times and a price that comes in at about $70 more than the Acer.

It's getting to be a fairly confusing time to be in the market for an 11-inch laptop. Why do we say that? Simply put, this used to be considered a "Netbook" category, mainly populated by Intel Atom processors. With a Pentium processor and a decent amount of hard-drive space and RAM, the Toshiba Satellite T115-S1105 is more like a minilaptop in a Netbook's body. The question is, does a thin-and-light this small appeal to you?

This capable ultraportable delivers over 7 hours of battery life, but other systems offer more bang for your buck. At $479, the 11.6-inch Toshiba Satellite T115-S1105 looks pretty attractive. It doesn’t cost that much more than a netbook but offers a larger display and more pep. However, the Acer Aspire 1410 is $80 less and outperforms the T115 on most tests. The 1410 also offers a more comfortable keyboard and a less smudge-prone design. If you want 35 minutes more of battery life and a bit more graphics punch, go with Toshiba’s offering.

Toshiba Satellite T115D Review
Source: Student Buying Guide English Archive.org version
The Toshiba Satellite T115D is a very worthy budget thin-and-light laptop, it’s a good option for students or people constantly on the go. Depending on your needs, you may want a more powerful PC at home since this laptop is not cut out for gaming or lots of multi-tasking. However, for getting work done during the day in a mobile manner the 11.6” screen Satellite T115D stands out. I do wish the battery life were better than the 4 – 5 hours I got and there were some issues with heat build-up. While the T115D design is better than the Acer Aspire 1410, overall I still lean towards the Aspire 1410 for its outstanding battery life and better performance. However, if you like the Toshiba brand and the looks of this laptop then the T115D is a buy!

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.

ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.

Intel Pentium:

SU2700: Entry level Single Core CPU with less power saving states as the Core line and because of the slow clock rate (1.3 GHz) not very fast. Directly soldered to the mainboard and therefore for thin and light laptops (CULV class).

AMD Athlon Neo:

MV-40: Slow single core processor for small and thin laptops. A bit faster than Atom based systems but the power consumption is also higher.

66%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
