The Toshiba Satellite L655-S5155 is a good budget desktop replacement laptop for fulfilling basic computing needs, but anything beyond that is asking too much. For another $50, the Editors' Choice, the Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ ($629.99 list, 4.5 stars) gives you a more generous selection of ports, WiDi and WiMax connectivity options, and better performance.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Review

If you like the look of this notebook, you should look for the lower spec’d and better priced versions of the Toshiba Satellite L650 which can be found at Toshiba.com and on Amazon for under $500. These notebooks don’t have quad-core processors, but look to offer a better value.

Thanks to its bright red chassis, the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161RDX is sure to be an attention grabber from a design standpoint. It also performed well in speed tests and impressed in integrated graphics and battery performance. What it lacks, though, is a good keyboard and mouse button experience, which is what you would get with the HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl and Acer Aspire AS5742-6475—for $50-$100 less.

The Toshiba Satellite L655D is a good-looking laptop with a comfortable keyboard, good display, and some nice included software. While it handled web surfing, streaming video, and other everyday tasks just fine, its noisy fan was very distracting. Plus, at $649, the price is a bit high for just "okay" performance. The more stylish Samsung RF510 has a more powerful Core i5 processor and discrete graphics card, and is available online for the same price. If all you need is basic performance and are looking to save some cash, the MSI CR650, which lasts longer on a charge, is a better deal for $499. Ultimately, the Satellite L655D is a tough sell.

With numerous laptops spread across its L, C, A, M, T, E, W, and R series, Toshiba may not run out of new product lines until it runs out of letters. Though not particularly inspiring, the basic 15-inch Toshiba Satellite L655 has a current-gen CPU and can be found for around $600, making it a worthwhile budget choice.

Here's a case where it's definitely worth paying a little bit extra to get Intel inside. The $620 Satellite L655 is faster, offers better graphics performance, and runs quieter than its AMD counterpart (which costs $598 from Walmart). Plus, the L655 lasts nearly two hours longer on a charge. To us, that's worth the extra 20 bucks. For $70 less, both the HP G6x and the Samsung RV511 are very good options, and we especially like the Samsung for its sleeker design. But the Toshiba offers much better graphics performance, giving you more bang for your buck. The Satellite L655 is a winner in our book.

Toshiba reviews

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145: The 5145 is a renamed Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with slightly higher clock rates. Therefore it has no DirectX 11 support and a performance between the 4570 and 5470.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

ATI Radeon HD 4250: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) for AMD processors with Avivo HD support and technically a higher clocked HD 4200.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Pentium:

P6000: The Pentium P6000 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Celeron P4500, the P6000 offers a bit better performance due to the faster System Bus and an increased Level 3 cache. However, VT-x is not available for the P6000.

P6100: The Pentium P6100 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Celeron P4600, the P6100 offers a bit better performance due to the faster System Bus and an increased Level 3 cache. However, VT-x is not available for the P6100.

P6200: The Pentium P6200 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Core i3-330M it does not feature HyperThreading leading to a slower multi-threaded performance.

Intel Core i3:

370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

2310M:

Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.1 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card (650/1100MHz).

Intel Core i5:

480M: The Core i5-480M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.66-2.9 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

AMD Phenom II X4:

P960: Slow clocked quad core CPU for mid size laptops (due to the 25 W TDP). Single threaded applications and games suffer from the low core speed.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.3 kg:

These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2.5 kg:

This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

70.58%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
