In the end, the Toshiba Satellite L645D hits its low-price goal, but at the cost of noticeably poor audio quality and mediocre video playback. The keyboard is quite good, however, so if you're looking for a laptop for basic office use and nothing more, the Toshiba Satellite L645D may just fit the bill.

Toshiba's L645D clearly aims for the hearts of budget laptop buyers, but some of the compromises it makes to hit its low price may be too severe.

Toshiba's Satellite L645D-S4037 offers some surprising performance thanks to the triple core AMD Phenom processor that is great for anyone that multitasks heavily or happens to like to work with video. The laptop also features a larger than average hard drive for those that need to store lots of files. The downside is that the laptop has one of the shorter running times for its price and it does not feature an HDMI connector for use with an external monitor or HDTV.

Toshiba’s $699 Satellite L645D-S4037 is powered by a triple-core AMD processor, but it otherwise brings few surprises to the company's long-running Satellite mainstream-laptop line. An unexceptional midrange notebook, the model has a triple-core processor that struggles to keep up with dual-core competitors, and its battery life will keep you tethered to a power socket.

Reviewing the Toshiba L645D-S4106 has left me with decidedly mixed feelings. Cheap Arrandale-based notebooks are going to provide better processor performance than even AMD's fastest in the L645D, and they'll offer better battery life in the process. Likewise, I really wish Toshiba would just put glossy plastic out to pasture.

Though the Toshiba Satellite L645-S4102 is a decent deal, unless money provides an insurmountable obstacle, you may want to consider shelling out a little more (only about $70 extra) for the Acer Aspire AS5742-6475, which delivers improved battery life and stronger overall performance that could well be worth paying for. If you can't go any higher, then, bland looks aside, the L645-S4102 should safely see you through most basic jobs.

AMD Phenom II X3:
P820: Mobile 3-core CPU based on the desktop Athlon II X3. Due to the missing level 3 cache and the slow clock speed not really well suited for gamers.
AMD Phenom II X2:

Intel Pentium:
P6200: The Pentium P6200 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Core i3-330M it does not feature HyperThreading leading to a slower multi-threaded performance.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

70.67%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
