Extortionate price? Toshiba charges a steep price for a simple 15-incher which does not even feature a dedicated graphics card. What are the advantages of the C55D? Does Carrizo-L change things in favor of the AMD APU?

The Toshiba Satellite C55DT offers everything you need for basic computing at a low price, but it's far from the best budget option. Its AMD A4 processor is prone to occasional slowdown, and its 15.6-inch HD display is too glossy for all-day entertainment. Budget shoppers are far better off with the $399 Dell Inspiron 15 5000, which offers a sturdier, more attractive design, stronger performance and impressively loud speakers.

Toshiba Satellite C55DT-C5245
The Toshiba Satellite is a touchscreen laptop with a lot of features for everyday work and entertainment. It is powered with an AMD A8 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz and 6 GB of DDR3 RAM for optimal multitasking performance. The 15.6” touchscreen only features a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels despite being large. There is no dedicated display card, hence graphics is handled by the integrated Radeon R5 chip. Gaming on low settings is possible on this Toshiba Satellite laptop nonetheless. Storage devices are a 1 TB hard drive and a Multi DVD burner. One of a total of 3 USB ports is a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfer from external hard disk and USB flash drives. Windows 10 home is pre-installed on this laptop and users get a 1 month free trial of Microsoft Office 365. The 4 cell lithium-ion battery lasts 5 to 6 hours on regular use. The laptop weighs 2.2 kg and is up to 26 mm thick with the lid closed. To sum it up, the Toshiba Satellite is a regular laptop which is suitable for home users and working professionals that require a laptop for basic needs.Specifications

The Toshiba Satellite C55DT-C5245 is a relatively inexpensive and well-equipped desktop-replacement laptop. It has great performance for its category, loads of storage space, and a large touch screen. It should appeal to you if you're on a modest budget and looking for a simple, everyday system. The Dell Inspiron 17 5000 Series Non-Touch holds on to its Editors' Choice for entry-level desktop-replacement laptops, however, due to its larger, higher-resolution screen and less bloatware, at a list price that's about $30 less.

All told, the Toshiba Satellite C55D-C5245 is a rather specialized illustration of the adage that you get what you pay for. It's short on luxuries, unless you count the Cortana key (and we suggest you use Windows+C instead). Its keyboard feel is disappointing. It's no match for most laptops in the $700 to $1,000 range.
