With a shiny black case and smart silver pinstripes, the $749 Toshiba Satellite A305D-S6848 features the upscale design found on the more-expensive 13-inch Satellite we reviewed earlier this year. It also incorporates the company's cool new Sleep and Charge feature, which lets you charge USB devices even when the laptop is shut down. The midsize Toshiba Satellite A305D-S6848 offers a high-end design and decent feature set, but you can get better performance for the same (or less) money.

Toshiba's Satellite brand has long played second-fiddle to the company's excellent Qosmio multimedia systems. But the updated Satellite line has a whole new look and feel, with a shiny metallic sheen and a clever new Sleep-and-Charge feature, which lets you charge USB devices even if the laptop is powered off. Toshiba rolls out its new Satellite look to the basic 15-inch AMD-powered Satellite A305D, but others offer more for the same $999.

The AMD-based Toshiba Satellite A305D is built off a good platform that it also shares with the Intel A305, but the small price cut doesn't make up for the huge loss in performance. For saving roughly $200 you go from a capable gaming machine with dual hard drives and an extended battery, to a budget configuration notebook. If the price was about $300 or $400 dollars less than it is now I would be all over it considering how much I love this design, but the retail price of $1,000 is asking way too much.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

ATI Radeon Xpress X1250: It is an onboard graphic chip, implemented on AMD M690G. Sometimes, it is also called Mobility Radeon X1250. It is based on X700 design but with less pixel- and vertex pipelines. It hardly suited for players.

AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.

TL-64:

In 65nm produced dual-core processor based on the K8 core. Compareable performance to a 2.0 GHz Core Duo CPU with 1MB Level 2 Cache (Celeron Dual Core e.g.).

2.7 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

2.7 kg:

59.5%: Such a poor rating is rare. There are only a few notebooks that were rated even worse. The rating websites do not give a purchase recommendation here.
