The Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q706 offers some of the latest high-end components in an enormous, flashy package, but its performance doesn't outshine the competition.

Toshiba's Qosmio X305 can best be described as a mobile gaming platform. The system is so large and draws so much power in order to drive all the hardware that it really doesn't work well as a portable laptop that isn't plugged in. When it is plugged in, it provides some of the best 3D graphics performance available which is great for those looking to play PC games on it. It is also well priced for the amount of hardware that comes in it. Now, if only they could make the design a little more subdued.

Toshiba Qosmio X305 Review

The Toshiba Qosmio X305 is the most uniquely-designed notebook I have tested. This notebook is unlike any other and anyone who carries it will get looks wherever they go. It has good gaming performance and an effective cooling system. The sound system is the best on any notebook, and the variety of ports is impressive. Unfortunately, there are too many cons for me to give this notebook my recommendation, at least in this configuration at this price point. It simply does not measure up to the competition. Lower-priced versions of the X305 around the $2,000 price point are available and a far better value than our top-of-the-line Q708 model.

If you’re looking for a gaming notebook that backs up its hot looks with blazing performance, put the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 on your short list. However, be prepared to shell out more than four grand for this speedster, and don’t even think about wandering too far from a power outlet.

So, now I'm tempted to sell this Toshiba and go with Gateway which has a better LCD screen, better CPU, better video card, and more gamma colors.

On the outside, the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 is identical to all the other recent X305-series models we've looked at, so if you can't stand the bold design, there's little chance you'll care what's inside. But, if you're down with shiny flame graphics, the X305-Q725 is loaded up with high-performance parts, including a quad-core processor, speedy DDR3 memory, and dual hard drives, one of which is a 64GB solid-state drive. The Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725's high-performance components are just as fancy as its exterior--and its price tag won't let you forget it.

If you're a closet gamer who hides behind a screen name and isn't the trash-talking type, the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 ($2,699.99 direct) is probably not for you. Its outlandish design, which conjures up images of fiery balls of flames striking a bloody canvas, seems fit for those who crave bragging rights for their systems. While the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725's fiery design may not appeal to everyone, its quad-core processor and an Nvidia GTX graphics card are parts that extreme gamers yearn for.

In terms of performance, the Qosmio X305-Q725 did what was expected from a notebook with its specifications. In several benchmark tests, the Qosmio X305-Q725 performed as well or better than some desktop systems. While high-end, powerful, desktop replacement gaming notebooks are never cheap, the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725’s $2,699.99 price tag is more affordable than many comparable laptops from boutique builders. The components used in this machine compliment each other well and strike a great balance between price and performance.

This powerful gaming rig’s quad-core engine, graphics performance, and excellent sound will blow you away. Gaming rigs don’t come much more stacked than this. Dropping $2,699 on a gaming machine is no laughing matter, but the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 is one seriously powerful gaming rig with superb sound. Its audio punch alone nearly puts this machine in its own class. However, the Alienware M17 provides more graphics oomph for $700 less, even though it lacks quad-core power. Still, the Qosmio X305-Q725 is an excellent multimedia and gaming notebook with plenty of style and substance.

Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The Toshiba Qosmio X305 gaming notebook proved to be very capable in our testing but its steep price does raise a few eyebrows now that notebooks like the Gateway P-7811 FX are on the market for a fraction of the price. The overall size of the X305 also comes into play when you realize it is almost twice as thick as other gaming notebooks (even thicker than the dual-screen Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds). If you can get past the price and size it does offer the best sound system I have heard on a notebook and dual graphics card support on certain configurations. Build quality could be improved in some areas but it held up well in our testing ... if not for a few plastic squeaks and pops. If you have the backpack or shoulders to carry around this gaming rig then you should check out the Qosmio X305-Q725.

Is the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 worth buying? That's the $4200 question. In light of its unimpressive screen resolution and odd keyboard, you'll have to provide your own keyboard, monitor, and mouse if you plan on having a serious gaming session at home. And though this desktop replacement has some of the most advanced hardware on the market, plus a class-leading sound system, you can get comparable gaming and multimedia performance for a fraction of the price from competing laptops. That said, half the appeal of this machine consists in watching it turn heads at your next LAN party. Trust me, it will.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GTS: The 9700M GTS is not based on the G96 (as the GT) but on the G94 core with 48 shaders. PureVideo HD helps the CPU in decoding HD videos.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX:

Similar to the 8800M GTX, the 9800M GTX is based on the G92 chip but includes more unified shaders. The 9800M GTX was later succeeded by the 55nm GTX 260M.

NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS:

Based on the desktop 9600 GT (G94 core), the 9800M GTS is produced in 65 nm and 55 nm on the 512 MB and 1024 MB models, respectively. The performance of the GTS is comparable to the GT version due to the higher clock speed. The PureVideo HD engine allows the GPU to decode HD videos.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

P7350:

Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.

Intel Core 2 Quad: Mobile version of the desktop Quad Core processor. Due to low clock rates it is not recommended for most applications.

Q9000:

Slow clocked quad core CPU (4 cores) that suffers especially in many games from the low clock speed. Therefore, not suited for games and only for highly multi threaded applications.

Intel Core 2 Extreme: The fastest Core 2 Duo variants of Intel are called Core 2 Extreme. Technically, these processors are based on a Merom/Penryn (X9000) core like all other Core 2 Duo  processors,  too.

QX9300: Expensive mobile Quad Core CPU with a free multiplicator and a TDP of 45 Watt. Due to the large Level 2 cache and the 2.5 GHz the CPU offers a good performance for single and multithreaded applications.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

4.1 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

4.5 kg:

71.44%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
