The limited viewing angles provided by the screen are disappointing at this price, and the Portégé R30 won’t be the best choice for users who do a lot of presentations work. However, the Portégé R30 can still earn its keep for basic tasks such as Web browsing or running productivity software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

The Toshiba Portégé R30-A-14K's lo-res TN display is disappointing in a laptop costing £900. However, the laptop's relatively lightweight design and long-lasting battery ensure that it could earn its keep when on the move. The hard drive's shock-protection feature and replaceable battery could also appeal to business users who need a long-life workhorse when they're out on the road, although we question the use of a slow hard disk in an expensive laptop.

The Toshiba Portege R30-A1302's appeal lies in the familiarity of its design and features. It has lots of legacy tech, like ExpressCard, VGA, and a DVD burner, in a chassis design that won't confuse veteran users in your organization. But its $1,600 price tag is similar to that of ultrabooks and other ultraportables that have a higher-resolution touch screen, like the Lenovo X1 Carbon and Dell e7440 Touch. That same price can also get you an ultraportable with a better battery life, like the Editors' Choice Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch.

There's no denying the versatility of this system thanks to its broad roster of business features, reasonable performance and impressive battery life. But several problems prevent us from giving a wholehearted recommendation. At this price, the screen is dreadful and the keyboard isn't good enough. High-quality units like the Dell Latitude 14 7000 Series and MacBook Pro are better investments.

The Toshiba Portegé R30 is ultimately recommendable over competing Ultrabooks only in certain situations. Its potential for high performance is a major selling point; unlike Ultrabooks, the R30 uses socketed full wattage Intel processors up to the i7 quad-core which is impressive considering its small 13.3″ chassis. Our review unit was the minimum configuration with only 4GB of RAM and a slow 500GB hard drive but Toshiba offers it with up to 16GB of RAM and a much faster mSATA SSD. We also noted the R30’s strong chassis, magnesium alloy build materials, built-in optical drive, docking station support, functional keyboard layout and great tracking stick.

The Toshiba Portege R30-A delivers the bare minimum a business notebook should cover and despite the old hardware, the system delivers unmatched performance for the given price thanks to the powerful 37W CPU. The chip can handle even more CPU or graphically intensive tasks with ease. Even though it’s just a 13-inch device, the laptop packs all the needed connectors and even integrates an optical drive. It’s a perfect solution for non-pretentious users that need a mobile business companion. It’s relatively light, a bit thick, but its exceptional rigidness will be applaud by a lot of users.

Intel HD Graphics 4600:
Integrated processor graphics card found on a number of Haswell CPU models. Offers varying clock speeds depending on the CPU.

Intel Core i3:
4000M:
Haswell-based dual-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with no Turbo Boost support. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
4100M:
Haswell-based dual-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz with no Turbo Boost support. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4600M:
Haswell-based dual-core processor clocked at 2.9 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

69.17%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
