The Best Laptops Q4/2020 - 81 Notebooks in Review
Traditionally, the final quarter of each year is a very busy time for laptop manufacturers. Not only do many OEMs attempt to release previously announced devices by the end of the year, they also need to brace themselves for the massive end-of-year sales around Thanksgiving (Black Friday and Cyber Monday). After all, warehouses need to be cleared for upcoming models introducing potentially groundbreaking innovations that are traditionally released during the events held early in the year.
Apple launches M1, Intel launches Evo to replicate its Ultrabook initiative success
Apple’s product launches have become a well-choreographed game of media hype. However, Apple’s last launch event rightly deserved the massive attention it garnered, at least from a notebook perspective. With their own in-house M1 CPU, an 8-core chip with integrated graphics based on an ARM design, Apple slowly but surely began its transition away from Intel, a cooperation that lasted for a good 15 years. ARM in a notebook – sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
It does indeed. Qualcomm has been unsuccessfully trying to pull off this trick for many years now. And while it might seem attractive to assess the success of one based on the failure of the other, we need to keep in mind that Apple and Qualcomm come from very different worlds and the premises are completely different. For example, notebooks based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPUs are facing software compatibility issues to this day while Apple’s macOS integration for their first-generation M1 products was superb. Applications that are not yet natively supported on Apple’s ARM CPU and thus have to go through an emulation layer still run extremely fast and in most cases without any issues whatsoever. In addition, Apple’s M1 CPU can easily keep up with Intel’s and AMD’s current offerings while simultaneously offering a hitherto unheard-of level of energy efficiency, at least based on first findings. For example, the new MacBook Air offers double the performance of its Core i5 predecessor while at the same time offering an additional 5 hours of battery life.
At the same time, Intel launched its Evo certification process. Coincidence? Who knows. As with the Ultrabook campaign many years ago laptops have to meet certain criteria in order to obtain an Evo certification, for example a battery life of at least 9 hours, rapid charging, Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6, and last but not least feature an 11th generation Intel CPU. While the Ultrabook initiative was launched a good 10 years ago in an attempt to make laptops portable and rid the world of the large bulky and heavy plastic boxes with extremely short battery life of yore the new Evo initiative has the unmistakable smell of a pure marketing campaign caused by AMD’s and now also Apple’s increased pressure.
The Best of the Best: Those Laptops Scored the Highest Ratings in our Reviews
In order to achieve the highest-possible rating of “Very Good” a laptop cannot afford any major weaknesses. Instead, it needs to perform very well in each and every category (gaming, office, mobile, etc.). Regardless of category, all notebooks share the same high demand on display quality. Some devices also require a solid balance between mobility and performance, depending on device class. Additional information about our rating system can be found here.
During the final quarter of 2020 a total of 13 out of 81 reviewed laptops managed to secure the highest possible rating and have thus been awared a “Top Rated” award. At the very top we find Apple’s MacBook Air 2020 M1 and the M1-based MacBook Pro 13 2020 ex aequo et bono with a rating of 91 %. Trailing behind with a rating of 90 % we find the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G7, a compact convertible made for everyday business use, and the AMD-based Lenovo Thinkpad T14 (4650U) as well as the HP Spectre x360 14 with a rating of 89 %. HP’s Spectre is also one of the first Evo-certified notebooks.
After Lenovo’s impressive Q3 performance this time around we only see one other Lenovo device on our list, the Lenovo Thinkpad X13 Yoga with a rating of 88 %, a rating that was also achieved by the Core i7 and FHD-equipped Dell XPS 13 9310, the Dell Latitude 7410 Enterprise Chromebook and its 2-in-1 pendant, the HP EliteBook 845 G7 (AMD), the Asus SudioBook Pro X, the HP EliteBook 835 G7, and last but not least the Schenker Vision 15, all of which have been awared a “Top Rated” award as well.
Our Favorites: Editors’ Choice Awards Q4/2020
Based on the test results during the time frame in question we conduct a survey among all editors in order to award a device an Editors’ Choice Award. This award is given to smartphones that offer a well-thought-out package, top performance in specific categories, or a particularly enticing price-performance ratio and are thus a particularly interesting choice for their respective category.
Apple MacBook Air 2020 (M1)
For many years, Apple’s MacBook Air has been the OEMs entry-level device. The current model starts at $999 and comes with Apple’s new M1 processor. In our review, this new processor showed exceptional performance in both CPU and GPU benchmarks. The ARM-based SoC is passively cooled, and the notebook thus completely silent. In theory, it should thus throttle under sustained load resulting in a significant performance penalty. In reality, the total drop was just around 10 % and thus more than acceptable. We also found no evidence of increased surface temperatures.
Due to its ARM instruction set the new CPU requires all non-native code to go through an emulation layer. This worked very well overall even though emulated applications suffered from a performance penalty and encountered various other issues, such as frame drops, crashes, or slow launch times occasionally as well. That said we do expect Apple to improve upon this emulation layer in the near future and software manufacturers to release M1-native applications for macOS soon. The biggest advantage of Apple’s M1 CPU is its exceptional energy efficiency. The MacBook Air’s 50 Wh battery lasted for around 16 hours in our real-world Wi-Fi test. Case and display remained identical.
At the time of writing, the entry-level base model MacBook Air started at $973 (see here on Amazon) and offered the most attractive deal. We also reviewed a better equipped M1 Air with 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, and a slightly faster 8-core GPU but found no real advantages for average users besides the additional storage space.
HP Spectre x360 14
Convertibles have become a staple of modern computing. Their unique hinge design allows for various use cases up to and including stylus-supported tablet use, and they are no longer thicker or heavier than regular traditional laptops. One of the best currently available convertible / 2-in-1 laptop is the brand-new HP Spectre x360 14. It features a 13.5-inch 3:2 display (1920 x 1280) and offers more screen real estate than traditional widescreen displays. This additional vertical space is particularly enticing for professional users.
Furthermore, the HP Spectre x360 14 offers solid performance and comes with a Thunderbolt 4 port. Its battery life easily surpasses Intel’s Evo certification requirements as it lasted up to 12 hours in our real-world Wi-Fi test. Its great keyboard, its large touchpad, and the included stylus are other benefits worth noting.
The Spectre x360 14 is not yet widely available in the US and starts at around $1,500 while higher-tier SKUs with high-resolution OLED displays can cost north of $2,000.
Honor MagicBook Pro (AMD)
Designed as affordable multimedia all-rounder the MagicBook is not only visually very similar to its role model, Apple’s MacBook Pro 16, but also features the same unique 16,1-inch design language. However, its price is dramatically different from Apple’s original as it starts at around $1,000 while Apple’s MacBook Pro 16 starts at $2,399. Its rating is also different from the original. While the latter scored 90 %, the MagicBook had to make do with 85 %.
Considering its low price and the overall good rating the MagicBook Pro can be an interesting alternative. In our review, we praised its high-quality aluminum case, its good performance (AMD CPU, Vega 6 GPU at a level of Nvidia’s GeForce MX250), its very good matte FHD display, and its solid battery life of 7-10 hours in our real-world Wi-Fi test. Unsurprisingly, Honor had to cut various corners in order to meet the low price point of $1,000. Accordingly, there are a few drawbacks, including poor speakers, no Thunderbolt ports, no SD card reader, and a not particularly well optimized fan noise curve under load.
All things considered the Honor MagicBook Pro 16 offers a very attractive price-performance ratio and thus received our Editors’ Choice award. Availability in the US is limited, and the device cannot be purchased through the usual retail outlets just yet.
