So overall this is an average spec netbook with average performance. It follows the tried and tested formula and merges together specifications that can be found from a number of manufacturers. We like the keyboard and we like the matte display, but we liked them last year on the MSI Wind too. The Stone Neo doesn't push the boundaries where many others in the netbook space are, so it perhaps won’t get too many people excited. The £316 price point is a little higher than some competitors like the Advent 4211c or Samsung NC10, which have similar specs in a slimmer package.

Can you hear that growing rumbling sound in the distance? Well, that's the thunderous din of overloaded bandwagons charging over the cobbles as they try to keep up with the latest trend in portable computing: the mini-notebook or netbook. If you're just starting out in the netbook market and want a no-frills standard edition that does just what it says on the tin, gives you a three-year warranty and is a pleasure to type on, then the Neo 101 is a good jumping-off point.

Stone's first netbook leaves us feeling unturned. The Neo 101 is Stone's first foray into the netbook market. The 10.1-inch screen is bright and crisp thanks to the 1024 x 600-pixel resolution and is suitable for displaying business applications such as spreadsheets and Word documents. There's no shiny screen covering in place, meaning bright light doesn't cause distracting reflections. While the Stone Neo 101 is a largely comfortable and competent machine, it fails to stand out from the crowd in any particular way. Nevertheless, the price is reasonable, and the three-year warranty will attract buyers.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

N270:

Power efficient, cheap and slow Netbook single core CPU. Because of the in-order execution, the performance per MHz is worse than Core Solo or Celeron M processors.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

10.10":

This is a standard display format for tablet computers or small convertibles. You see more on the screen than on a smartphone but you can't use big resolutions well. On the other hand, mobility is not a problem.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Stone: The Stone Group is a British IT provider and computer manufacturer, specialising in the supply and support of ICT and audio-visual solutions to schools, colleges, universities, local government and the emergency services. Having acquired Rock in 2008, the Stone Group now sells direct to consumers, and offers high-end business and gaming notebooks.

70%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
