IFA 2015 | Sony announces Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact

Sony claims that Xperia Z5's camera can focus in just 0.037 seconds, which makes it the fastest autofocus in a smartphone.

Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact have been the subject of numerous rumors and leaks for the last several weeks. Today, Sony finally took the wraps off its next generation smartphones at IFA 2015 in Berlin.

The Xperia Z5 features a 5.2-inch, 1920 x 1080 resulution display, while the Xperia Z5 Compact’ comes with a 4.7-inch, 1280 x 720 screen. Both are IPS units with Triluminous and X-reality technologies for improved image clarity.

Both smartphones are powered by 64-bit, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chips, with four Cortex-A57 cores and four Cortex-A53’s, clocked up to 2 GHz, with Adreno 430 taking care of the graphics. The Z5 comes with 3 GB of RAM, while the Z5 Compact only with 2 GB. The 32 GB of on-board storage that both devices offer (partly taken up by the preinstalled Android 5.1.1) can be expanded via micro-SD card slot. Battery capacity is 2900 mAh for the Xperia Z5 and 2700 mAh for Xperia Z5 Compact. According to Sony, both should be sufficient for two days of operation.

Xperia Z5 features Sony’s new ExmorRS, 23MP sensor and f/2.0 with optical stabilization and 4K video recording. The company claims that the main camera can focus in just 0.037 seconds, which makes it the fastest autofocus in a smartphone.

Both devices are water- and dust-resistant (IP68) and feature a fingerprint sensor built into the power button.

The Sony Xperia Z5 will be available in white, black, gold and green color versions, while the Z5 Compact will come in yellow and coral on top of that. The smartphones will hit the stores in October. Pricing remains to be announced.
