Sony Mobile introduced the Xperia Ear earlier this year at MWC 2016 in Barcelona months before Apple made its AirPods available. Now, the Sony Bluetooth earbuds can now be pre-ordered for 200 Euros in Graphite Black for a ship date sometime before the end of November. The pair of earbuds weigh just 6.8 g according to their online specifications.
Sony Mobile Germany will reward early adopters with a gift card worth 50 Euros to redeem at the Sony Mobile online store. The card applies to any new purchase of a Sony Xperia smartphone, though it remains to be seen if the Japanese manufacturer will offer the gift card to other regions around the world.
The Xperia Ear is able to receive commands via voice control from the user. Shortcuts include making a voice call, navigating to a certain location, or searching online with keywords. The earbuds can also read back incoming texts from WhatsApp, Facebook, SMS, push notifications, and relevant weather data on the connected smartphone. The wearer must tilt or nod his or her head before the Xperia Ear can begin receiving voice commands to prevent accidental inputs.
The wireless earbuds can utilize both NFC and Bluetooth to connect to the smartphone. Though expensive, the earbuds are made of soft silicone and are IPX2-certified to be waterproof. Sony claims that the 65 mAh internal battery should last for a whole day while the included protective cover has its own 300 mAh internal battery for charging the earbuds on-the-go.
