Stressful muscle man. At the announcement for the release of the Vaio VPC-F11 series, Sony used the word "Gamer" for the first time in its press statement. Sony fans listened attentively: Could this Vaio be suitable for gaming? The parameters allow speculation for a multimedia-master or a desktop replacement. A matte full-HD display with strong colors, Core i7-720QM, 8GB RAM, and an Nvidia Geforce GT 330M definitely have potential for high performance.

Mainly designed for video and photo work, the Sony Vaio VPCF11 is equipped with a wide Full HD VAIO screen with Blu-Ray for "optimal High Definition entertainment", as well as "cinema style surround sound". Designed for video work and multimedia leisure time, the Sony Vaio VPCF11M1E offers good overall performance. Its graphics card allows you to do some gaming with recent 3D titles and it's a nice machine to use. Just a shame that its screen has such a low contrast ratio as the Full HD res is a real plus.

Sony's VAIO F-Series is a relatively new release and comprises midrange multimedia machines. The Sony VAIO VPC-F11M1E/H is a great machine that offers powerful performance at a price that won't break the bank. Its 3D performance may not be as impressive as the Acer here, but it's still good enough to carry out resource intensive multimedia tasks.

Plenty of power, a great screen and a plethora of features make the VAIO F11 a solid all-rounder. There's a nice continuity to much of Sony's VAIO line-up, with the same grey styling applied to ultraportables and desktop replacements alike. The VAIO F11 is ostensibly an entertainment laptop, but its 16.4in Full HD screen and Core i7 processor make it just as capable of workstation duties.

Sony has given up on its 18.4-inch media center—the AW series—as demand for it has weakened and customers are having a tough time find room such a colossal laptop. The Sony VAIO VPC-F1190X is a little bit on the pricey side, but it features a Core i7 quad-core processor and a new technology called Transfer Jet.

Boasting a quad-core CPU, dedicated graphics, and a Blu-ray optical drive, Sony’s VAIO F-Series notebook delivers multimedia power at prices ranging from $999.99 for a base configuration to more than $2,700 for a fully loaded system. The F-Series offers fast quad-core performance and some nice features, but multimedia buffs may be disappointed with the low-res screen and the graphics performance.

More than £1,000 is a lot to pay for a notebook these days, but you're not only getting high-end specifications with the Sony VAIO F Series, you're also getting a notebook that has a brilliant screen, a well-designed and solid body and useful Adobe software. It's a machine that's ready to use straight out of the box, and you can use it for everything. Not only can you use it for work and creativity purposes, you can also play games on it (it recorded 6498 in 3DMark06), watch movies using its Blu-ray drive (which can also burn Blu-ray discs), and, if you stick a USB or ExpressCard/34-based digital TV tuner in its side, you can plug it into a big-screen TV via HDMI and turn it into a fully fledged media centre. We just wish it had a 7200rpm hard drive rather than a 5400rpm drive, and that it had space for two drives in its chassis. We also wish it didn't come with so much preinstalled VAIO software. Sony means well, but all that software will do is annoy you and take up system resources.

If 2010 was the year of the 3DTV, perhaps 2011 is the year of the 3D laptop. Despite not receiving nearly the same level of hype as stereoscopic televisions, we've seen more 3D-enabled laptops this year than ever. Sony makes some of the best-looking multimedia laptops out there, and the 3D Vaio F215FX is no exception. But you'll have to be willing to pay extra for that sharp design.

The $1,799 VAIO is a compelling multimedia laptop for those who crave 3D. The 240-MHz, full-HD screen combined with Nvida's 3DVision technology adds a new level of enjoyment to watching movies and playing games. We also like the backlit keyboard on this 16-inch notebook, as well as the sleek design. While the 3D experience isn't as immersive, some may prefer the HP Envy 3D. For $200 less, that machine offers much faster frame rates. And consumers willing to sacrifice performance and 3D quality in favor of affordability and longer battery life will want to check out the $999 Fujitsu LifeBook AH572. Overall, though, the VAIO F 3D is a tempting choice for media mavens searching for a high-quality 3D experience.

As configured, our laptop cost just under $1900, which is fairly pricey for what we got. Overall, the VAIO F-Series appears to be a solid multimedia PC with limited gaming chops and a crisp display that is perfectly capable of showing off stereoscopic 3D movies. But the beauty is entirely under the hood: If you don't mind the unsightly exterior and are willing to pay the Sony premium, the F-Series is worth a closer look.

So far, the implementation of true 3D for movie playback and gaming in laptops has been spotty at best. Leave it to entertainment behemoth Sony, though, to top all the competition in terms of 3D. Speedy performance and engaging true-3D graphics make this VAIO a winning entertainment notebook. (Just be prepared to pay.)

Another recent addition to the 3D gaming market comes in the form of the Sony VAIO F series (model VPCF21AFX/BI) 16-inch laptop. This notebook weighs in at a little over seven pounds and features a full HD display. It makes a great multimedia laptop with the included Blu-ray drive. Unfortunately, the price is nearly $2,000, so if you're not looking to game or watch movies in 3D you might want to consider a different 2D laptop to save money.

Sony certainly makes distinctive-looking laptops. And in a market saturated with cookie-cutter grey boxes (or now, endless MacBook Air knockoffs), that's more important than it may seem at first. If the size is right for you, the Vaio F Series is a well-made high-end laptop, and is a good reminder that Sony is one of the few brands that comes close to Apple on design and polish.

Performance issues aside, the VAIO F Series isn't such a bad buy. Sure, you'll have to contend with Sony's extra software (such as its VAIO Gate dock), and the Firewire port is weirdly located on the front of the computer, but otherwise the F Series is a decent laptop for multimedia playback and basic tasks. I don't love the design, but others might. Plus, it's pretty portable for a desktop replacement.

There's a lot of win in the $1,399 Sony VAIO F. In addition to a vibrant 16.4-inch 1080p display, it packs a solid performance punch, has a compelling suite of multimedia software, and a Blu-ray DVD burner. Still, it can take a toll on your wallet. The Dell XPS 15 offers the same processor and GPU--but 8GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive and arguably better sound--for $1,099. The HP Pavilion dv7-6163cl retains our Editors' Choice because it's such an impressive value at under $1,000—though, to be sure, it lacks two key features, a Blu-ray drive and a true 1080p display, that make the Sony VAIO VPC-F237FX/B a temptation even at $450 more. Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is the successor of the GT 230M and technically just a slightly higher clocked GT 240M (but it should still maintain the power envelope of the GT 230M as the naming suggests).
NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M: Successor of the GeForce GT 335M featuring DirectX 11 support and based on the GF108 chip.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:
Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
820QM:
The Core i7-820QM is a high-end quad core CPU for laptops that clocks due to the Turbo Mode from 1.73-3.06 GHz. Therefore, the processor combines the advantages of fast single core CPUs and slow quad-core CPUs. Hyperthreading allows the simultaneous use of 8 Threads in parallel.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2720QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2640M: Very fast dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i5:
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
560M:
The Core i5-560M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks also between 2.67-3.2 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
2430M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.4 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.7-3 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

16.00:
This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.2 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
81.05%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
