The Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM is a mainstream laptop that targets movie enthusiasts, thanks to the Blu-ray drive, excellent horsepower, and a few technologies that can get those flicks onto the big screen. Other than its need to trim some bulk off its shell, it's a well-designed laptop and should appeal to those who value good looking laptops. Now, a Blu-ray drive isn't for everyone, and it doesn't come cheap. If that not a consideration for you, and you're looking for a stellar, all-around mainstream laptop, look no further than the Editors' Choice Asus U46E-BAL5.

The Style in SonyStyle. Sony refreshes its budget 14-inch Vaio E lineup for the New Year with WiDi, Blu-Ray and standard voltage Sandy Bridge Core i5 CPUs. But, has the Japanese giant cut any corners to reach that sub $500 starting price? Find out in this review what the new Vaio E does right – and ultimately what still needs to be done.

Pleasing aesthetics, outstanding battery life, and a Blu-ray drive are all good reasons to consider the Sony VAIO VPC-EG27FM/W for your next 14-inch laptop. And, don't forget its generous wireless feature set and solid Core i5 performance. The lack of the latest high speed transfer technologies leaves a gaping hole in an otherwise solid offering by Sony. That said, the Dell Inspiron 14z, with its lighter, slimmer chassis, robust feature set, and backlit keyboard, remains our Editors' Choice for 14-inch mainstream laptops.

Sony has made a major improvement with the their VAIO E series laptops by upgrading the battery packs to a larger capacity. While this makes the VAIO VPCEG33FX a bit heavier than most other 14-inch laptops, it provides it with one of the longest running times in its price range even if they are shorter than Sony claims and it certainly is much more compact that the majority of laptops which feature 15-inch screens.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

76.2%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
