Sony's VAIO notebooks have long been at the cutting edge of style, and the VGN-NW120J continues the trend. This sleek mainstream laptop features a cool textured finish and a nice, colorful 15.5-inch widescreen display, but at $799.98 (list), it is a bit more expensive than competing systems that offer similar components and features. The Sony VAIO VGN-NW120J is a bit more expensive than similarly configured 15-inch notebooks, but its snazzy design is sure to turn a few heads.

The inclusion of a Blu-ray drive sets the VAIO NW apart from the crowd, but that feature comes at the expense of others. You'll find many notebooks in this price range with faster CPUs, larger hard drives, discrete graphics, less weight, and so on – then again, they won't be capable of playing Blu-ray movies. Apart from Bluetooth support, though, we can't think of any features that Sony left out, making the system a decent, if not standout performer overall.

With its eye-catching design and Blu-ray playback, this multimedia notebook is a solid purchase for entertainment addicts on a budget. Featuring an eye-pleasing design, good sound quality, and Blu-ray playback, the Sony VAIO NW150J/T is an attractive multimedia notebook. While listed for $879, Best Buy currently offers the white and silver versions of this notebook for $799, making it all the more attractive for those who are looking for Blu-ray on a budget. Gamers, however, will want to opt for a configuration that includes ATI graphics (with or without Blu-ray).

Is Blu-ray the future of laptops? If Sony had its way that would certainly be the case. And if all Blu-ray-playing laptops were as well-executed as Sony's Vaio NW160J, that wouldn't be the most daunting consideration. Sony has been packaging its Vaio laptops as design-centric, relatively expensive multimedia machines with a Blu-ray-playing focus for a while now, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the company's new line of slightly higher than midrange laptops, the NW series, culminates with a 15-inch Blu-ray version. Although it's expensive for a 15-inch multimedia laptop, the Blu-ray and game-playing capabilities of the attractive 15.4-inch Sony Vaio NW160J make it a worthy portable entertainment system.

Sony's VAIO NW180J/S is a well-equipped wide-screen notebook with a comfortable design, a unique and quirky appearance, and a price lower than you'd expect for a Blu-ray–equipped portable from Sony. It's an attractive choice for those looking for a wide-screen multimedia notebook to take on the road, but its short battery life makes it more useful in the hotel room than on a long flight. With its excellent screen, Blu-ray playback, and low price, the VAIO NW180J/S is a standout media notebook.

The Secret's in the Mix. Sony sees its Vaio NW11 as a chic and elegant multimedia contemporary. At the same time, the chamfered and compact case shouldn't lack the necessary mobility. If these statements apply and how well the Vaio NW11 does in the other tests will be unveiled in our comprehensive review.

It's easy to get excited when Sony delivers one of its many super-expensive ultra-portables, like the VAIO TT or Z Series, to our door, but in the past its mainstream laptops have been a little hit and miss. For all the lustre and acclaim its VAIO brand engenders in consumers, the reality isn't always the all singing, all dancing computing experience people imagine. However, in the new NW Series, we reckon Sony might have finally cracked the mainstream affordable laptop. It's not quite perfect, but the NW11S is easily the best mainstream laptop Sony has produced in a long while. It has a nicely balanced specification and feature set, is reasonably priced and won't attract the dust, grease and grime so prevalent on laptops these days.

Sony brings out a big-screen, general-purpose entertainment laptop with a budget-friendly price. The NW125J is an oversized and promising machine that does what it says: That is, give your kids the basics they need for the new school year along with a mild multimedia boot in the keister. But with limitations like the lack of a discrete GPU, I'm wondering if Sony could have made a couple of smarter moves to keep the price down at the $800 level.

It won't be the lightest laptop on campus this fall, and it may not fit into every knapsack or laptop bag, but if you're willing and able to tote around a little extra weight, the Sony Vaio VGN-NW125J/T holds great appeal for its big, cinematic display and roomy keyboard. The software bundle is a winner, too, with a full version of Microsoft Office and 12 months of Norton Internet Security. With just about the biggest display you'd be willing to lug around on a daily basis, the Sony Vaio VGN-NW125J/T attempts to be both a low-end entertainment laptop and versatile everyday productivity machine. But for the battery life, it pulls it off.

Has Sony embraced run-of-the-mill with its latest laptop? The VAIO NW11Z/S is a substantial, if overpriced, laptop. The most noticeable feature is the screen, which is a 15.5in ultra-wide 16:9 affair that's perfect for watching films on. It's a crisp, clear screen, and one of the best that we've seen on a laptop for a while. But it does stand out, especially next to the acres of other laptops that pass through our offices. We feel that a few more new features would have gone a long way, though.

The Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S is a stylish, spacious laptop for high-definition fans with low budgets. For a reasonable $699 at Best Buy, the Vaio NW270 outclasses the majority of its mainstream competition by including a Blu-ray drive. Blu-ray movies look crisp and sharp on its wide-screen 15.5-inch display, and they even sound respectable using the Vaio NW270's integrated speakers. The Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S is a low-cost, Blu-ray-equipped laptop that makes a great choice for home use and, should you be willing to tote around a 15-inch machine, a decent choice as your everyday, take-it-with-you laptop.

Everything about the Sony Vaio NW240F is pretty pleasing. Sony's VAIO VGN-NW280F/B is very much designed for the multimedia enthusiast on a budget. With a price tag of just over $900, the system comes equipped with a Blu-ray compatible drive, good sound and dedicated graphics that let it excel at playing back high definition video content. The system does sacrifice a bit in terms of general performance by using the older DDR2 memory standard and an older Intel processor that will really detract those who don't need Blu-ray support.

A stylish machine with decent office performance, but 3D power is lacking. The Sony VAIO VGN-NW20EF/P is an entry-level multimedia laptop that offers great style and quality. Office performance is decent, but 3D performance isn't quite what we hoped. Sony's VGN-NW25GF/S is a handsome devil. The chrome VAIO logo takes centre stage in the middle of the llid, and the textured finish gives it a dash of class. The Sony may cut a dash visually, but it isn't the perfect all-rounder. Great ergonomics raise it above the pack, but with the VGN-NW25GF/S falls short of the all-rounder mark.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: Lower middle-class GPU that features a low shader count and a 64 Bit memory bus but a high clock speed. Similar to the desktop Radeon 4550. Supports Avivo HD and DirectX 10.1.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: The Mobility HD 4650 is based on the Desktop 4650 architecture, but features a lower clock rate of memory and core. Depending on the core clock (450-550MHz possible) and the used memory (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 with 600-800 MHz possible) the mobile 4650 can show a different performance. The current consumption of the chip alone ranges from 15-25W. Features Avivo HD video features.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T6500:
Entry level Penryn based dual-core CPU with a small 2MB level 2 cache and FSB800. Similar to the T6570 but without VT-x.
P7350:
Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
T6600: Entry level Core 2 Duo dual core processor with a small 2MB level 2 cache and without virtualization functions.
P7450: Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
T4300:
Entry - middle class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.
