The Sony Vaio AW11 is pricey for a laptop – although the screen quality more than justifies the price. The Sony Vaio AW11 is so big and unwieldy that it's worth remembering that you could get a more powerful desktop PC for the same price with an LED monitor that would put the AW11's screen to shame. But if you want a degree of portability, Sony's laptop is one of the best around.

The Sony VAIO VGN-AW11M/H is a satisfactory machine to use. The large screen and keyboard make it a pleasure to use but we'd suggest opting for a higher spec, if your budget allows, as you'll find this entry-level model doesn't quite live up to the expectations of a true desktop replacement laptop.

The AW's keyboard is similar in style to all recent Sony VAIO's, with the keys protruding through individual holes in the chassis. This is the first time we've seen a dedicated numeric pad alongside as well, however, and usability proved excellent. In relation to regular laptops, the touchpad is huge, and offers an easy and accurate way of navigation. While our review model featured a traditional 300GB hard drive, top of the range AW's feature both 128GB flash drives and 500GB hard drives, offering fast access speeds and generous storage space.

Most consumers might be in the market for smaller machines that they can toss into a briefcase or even a purse, but there are still plenty of places in which a big and beautiful multimedia book like Sony’s AW might be preferable, including student dorms, bedrooms, and home offices. A basic AW model sells for $1,499, but our test rig, which, in our estimation, had all of the most desirable upgrades (including more storage, a bit more RAM, a higher-resolution screen, and a Blu-ray burner) sells for the still relatively affordable price of $2,039.

The Sony VAIO VGN-AW180Y/Q is a powerful, feature-packed entertainment notebook. We prefer the design and keyboard of the sleeker HP HDX 18—and we found the Blu-ray playback to be more reliable—but this desktop replacement is a solid splurge-worthy option with a better looking 16:9 display and crisper TV tuner. And you can pick it up for a much more affordable $1,799 if you forgo the dual solid state drives and drop down the clock speed and RAM.

Plenty of laptops offer a vibrant, saturated picture that's pleasing to the eye, but if your livelihood depends on color accuracy above all else, most of these systems just won't cut it. Most photographers and graphic designers use external monitors to achieve color accuracy, but Sony is hoping to change that with the high-priced VAIO VGN-AW190 ($3,219 direct). The Sony VAIO VGN-AW190's high-definition, Adobe RGB-compatible screen promises unparalleled color accuracy, just what you'll want if your job involves exacting color comparison or judging images on the fly.

The Sony VAIO AW170Y/Q is the latest desktop-replacement notebook to feature a breathtaking 18.4-inch display and a wealth of features. Plus you’ll send a signal that you’re surviving the market crash just fine, thank you, since you just dropped $3,300 on a new laptop. Sony’s gorgeous, large-screen—and pricey—VAIO AW170Y/Q offers plenty of features and power, but the $3,300 price tag will be tough to swallow for most.

The Sony VGN-AW11Z is a great gaming option for those who fancy getting a bit of work done in between rounds. It’s not for hardcore gamers, but if you fancy a quick deathmatch at lunch you can do happily, before jumping back into video/photo editing mode, where the AW range excels. It’s also a great option if you ever fancy using it as a laptop and taking it out the house – it’s easily the most portable 18 inch model we’ve ever come across, and that’s saying something. The AW11Z may not play every game you want at the highest possible settings, but it will let you play them wherever.

The Sony Vaio AW11Z/B's design is simple - black with a silver trim in this case, with only the usual PC-laptop flair of logos spoiling it a little. We were very impressed with the great design of the Sony Vaio AW11Z/B and its relatively light weight meant it was practical to transport. You get a lot of laptop for your money, but we weren't convinced by the quality of the screen and found the overall performance mediocre.

A stylish high-end media system, offering power, comfort and high quality. The VAIO VGN-AW11Z/B (£1559 inc. VAT) is the mid-range model, offering enough features to keep most users entertained for years. The 18.4-inch screen is one of the best we've seen on any laptop, offering vivid colours. Blacks are also accurately dark. It's a Super-TFT panel, so there are some inevitable reflections in brighter conditions, but it's a price well worth paying. Photos and movies look stunning, with high-definition (HD) films in particular reproduced in their full glory. External displays can also easily be connected using the high-definition digital HDMI or analogue VGA ports. If you can afford the high price tag, the AW11Z/B is without peer. You'll find a perfect blend of performance and features, and the large screen makes the most of your HD movies.

70% The Sony VAIO AW-17GU - Awwwww!
Source: Hardware Zone English Archive.org version

So with a relatively decent (but average) performance but a more than average size, you would expect the Sony VAIO AW-17GU to be slightly expensive in the way VAIO units always are. Unfortunately, this is not the case here, as the AW-17GU comes in at a whopping price tag of S$6999. That's a lot of money to spend on a DTR and we're unsure if it's actually worth it. While Apple naysayers tend to put down Apple's products by complaining about the so-called "Apple tax", it's sometimes strange to find Sony getting away with the same thing. To further prove our point, we also checked out the Sony VAIO VGN-AR18GP DTR model that was top of the line two years back which was the first notebook to feature a Blu-ray drive.

Sony has been producing media enabled laptops for some time and were one of the first to introduce Blu-ray drives. The new VAIO VGN-AW235J/B is a surprise release from the company that makes for an extremely capable high definition media platform at a very reasonable price. While it might still be more expensive than many other desktop replacements, it is still one of the cheapest to feature a Blu-ray burner. Of course, the 18.4-inch screen makes it less portable than those using 17-inch screens and Sony does have fewer peripheral connectors than similar equipped laptops.

For professional photographers working on location, the usual weapon of choice to accompany a digital SLR camera is a lightweight laptop, able to give quick visual feedback on work in progress. Only an elite few machines soar above the £2,000 mark, and laptops like this hugely-expensive Sony VAIO need something special to justify the outlay. The Sony VAIO VGN-AW21XY/Q sets its stall out as an entertainment powerhouse thanks to several attributes, not least its stunning screen. As well as boasting a diagonal width of 18.4in and a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080, it uses the same RGB LED technology that so impressed us in the Dell Studio XPS 16. The RGB LED screen, Blu-ray writer and awesome specification result in the best all-round desktop replacement on the market.

We recently reviewed one end of the desktop-replacement laptop spectrum in the shape of the £410 Toshiba Satellite L350 and now here's the other -- the Sony Vaio VGN-AW31M/H. With an 18.4-inch screen, this is one serious slab of Sony technology and it has a price tag to match: £1,100. Value for money is subjective with a laptop like this, but there's no denying the Sony Vaio VGN-AW31M/H is a large, beautiful desktop replacement. The specification falls short of stunning considering the price, but it's still a very capable performer and few laptops this massive look as lovely as this

Sony's VAIO VGN-AW310J/H is a less expensive version of their AW series laptops that brings Blu-ray capability to a more affordable level. In doing this, Sony sacrificed a number of features that could have made it an exceptional laptop. Most notable of these is the 18.4-inch display that doesn't reach full 1080p HD video resolutions. Sony also didn't address the limited number of expansion ports compared to similar sized laptops.

We rather liked the last vast Sony Vaio laptop that we reviewed, the 18.4-inch VGN-AW31M/H, but its specification fell rather short for the price. Now there's a new monster model to up the ante, the cheaper and more balanced, 18.4-inch Sony Vaio VGN-AW41MF/H. It will set you back about £1,000. The Vaio VGN-AW41MF/H is a luscious behemoth with plenty of muscle, and comes at a more reasonable price than some similar Sony machines. We'd heap more praise on it if its screen were crisper, but that doesn't detract too much from a highly capable desktop-replacement laptop.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS: Compared to the 9300M G, the GS has only 8 unified shaders but a higher clock rate. Therefore, the performance should be similar according to Nvidia. Supports
Hybrid-SLI (GeForceBoost and HybridPower) with Nvidia 9100M G and PureVideo HD (VP3).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Successor of the 8600M GT and because of the smaller 65nm production process the card is higher clocked (and therefore faster) with the same current consumption.Furthermore, it features an improved video processor (VP3) and HybridPower to save current (in conjunction with the 9100M G).

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

P8400:

Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).

T9600:

High-end dual core CPU and similar to the Core 2 Duo P9700 but with a higher power consumption (35 W versus 28 W). Should be sufficient for all games of 2009.

T9400:

The T9400 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo P9500 with a higher TDP of 35 Watt.

P8600:

Fast but still not overpriced dual core CPU. For most games and multimedia applications sufficient and due to the 25W TDP even for smaller notebooks useable.

T9800:

High end dual core CPU for laptops with 6 MB level 2 cache and 2.93 GHz. Well suited for demanding games (of 2009) and applications (especially single threaded).

P8700:

Mid-range dual core processor with 3 MB level 3 cache and a TDP of 25 Watt.

T6500:

Entry level Penryn based dual-core CPU with a small 2MB level 2 cache and FSB800. Similar to the T6570 but without VT-x.

T9900: Fastest (in 2009) Core 2 Duo Dual Core CPU and similar to the Core 2 Extreme X9100 (withouth the free multiplicator, but instead less TDP and cheaper). Very well suited for games and demanding applications.

P7450: Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.

2.7 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

4 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

79.37%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
