The Sony VAIO Pro 11 (SVP11215PXB) is a sharp looking ultrabook powered by a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 CPU. It offers a beautiful hi-res touch-screen display and is extremely thin and light, but its graphics performance is middling and its battery life comes up short.

Sony has always been big on style, and the VAIO Pro 11 is no exception. It's thin and light carbon fiber body will fit comfortably into a briefcase, carry bag, or backpack, and will withstand the rigors of frequent travel. It's powerful enough for all but the most demanding graphics workload, and its 1080P touch-screen display is a pleasure to use and a beauty to behold. That said, the Macbook Pro 13-Inch (Retina Display) maintains its edge, thanks to its incredible 2,560-by-1,600 display and seven-hour battery life, which is why it remains our Editors' Choice for high-end ultrportables. Our high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice is the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T ($1,199), and if you can handle the extra pound and a quarter, the UX31A-BH15T is a better buy overall with over six hours of battery life.

Hands-on: Sony Vaio Pro 11 review

The model we played with had a 1.6Ghz Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, and was running Windows 8 Pro. Sadly we weren't able to test battery life, or really push the graphics capabilites, improved by 50 per cent and 40 per cent respectively in our play, but will make sure we test both throughly in our full review when the new laptop hits the shops later this month.

The VAIO Pro 11, though, is more than the sum of its middle-of-the-road benchmark scores. It's a well-engineered—more than that, a finely crafted—system that happens to be the lightest and most portable touch-screen laptop we know of. Its keyboard takes a little (in our case, a very little) getting used to and its battery life is merely okay, but its display is crisp and colorful and its construction exemplifies quality.

Finally, a new flagship ultraportable to replace the Z
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
If you've ever read the comments section here at Engadget, you know it's possible to develop a fanatical attachment to a brand. Those of you who have been waiting to retire your old Z-series laptops can rest easy. The Pro series improves on the old Z line in almost every way, with an even thinner and lighter design, a more comfortable keyboard and epic battery life.

The Sony VAIO Pro 11 largely delivers on Intel's Haswell promises inside an amazingly light design. While the performance gains are modest on this Ultrabook, we appreciate the above-average battery life. Plus, you can get more than 14 hours of juice if you spend more for the sheet battery.

80% Sony VAIO Pro 13 review: light touchscreen Ultrabook
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
The Vaio Pro may fall short in some areas, but that’s only because it aims so high. Its weight and size are truly impressive, and bode well for the coming generation of Haswell laptops. However, the flexible carbon fibre doesn’t instill confidence and battery life isn’t on a par with the MacBook Air.

The bottom line is that the Sony VAIO Pro 13 is a great touchscreen laptop. We love the light weight and very mobile feel that it offers, and its Full HD screen is absolutely beautiful for viewing photos and videos. The storage performance is excellent from the PCI Express-based SSD, and the unit feels comfortable to use overall thanks to keys that have surprisingly good travel. We just wish that the graphics performance was a little better (especially after all the hype from Intel), and that the touchpad was a little more user-friendly.

Granted the Sony Vaio Pro 13 is the first Windows Haswell Ultrabook to hit the market and its only Haswell ultraportable competition is the mid-2013 MacBook Air. I have a feeling that even under competition, the Vaio Pro will hold up well. We know about several other Windows 8 touch screen Haswell Ultrabooks already since Acer, Dell and Lenovo have announced some models that are basically the same as their outgoing Ivy Bridge counterparts except the updated CPU/GPU.

With the VAIO Pro 13, Sony has taken the essence of the VAIO Z Series and honed it to near-perfection. The flexible construction may raise eyebrows – and only time will tell whether the VAIO Pro 13’s flexible chassis can last the course – but it’s hard not to come away impressed. Despite costing no more than even its most keenly priced competitors, the VAIO Pro 13 crams an equivalent amount of power and versatility into the very lightest Ultrabook chassis money can buy. If you travel a lot but can’t afford to sacrifice performance, we’d dust off that credit card.

What can we say Sony, it worked. Within seconds of picking up the Pro we'd fallen in love with it. It's stylish, thin and light. The screen is gorgeous, and the touch control works. It has just about the best keyboard we've used on a laptop, and in Ultrabook terms it's miles ahead of the competition. The price, starting at £1,000 is going to be a problem for some, but considering the raw power you're getting with this machine, how light and beautiful it is, we honestly don't think there's another laptop on the market that's better suited for people who need power, but without losing the ability to travel.

The VAIO Pro 13 reminds us that Sony can still wow. Despite weighing a mere 2.4 lbs., this touch-screen Ultrabook sports one of the fastest SSDs ever, along with long battery life. We're also impressed with the sound this ultraportable produces. And although the contrast could be better, the 13-inch Triluminos display offers good color accuracy.

Sony Vaio SV-P1321WSNB

With a weight of just 1.1 kg, the 13 inch Sony Vaio SV-P1321WSNB is an extremely portable touchscreen machine. The design is beautiful, with slim lines and a dark metal look with a subtle, yet beautiful sheen. It is made from lightweight but durable carbon fiber. The Sony Vaio SV-P1321WSNB has a few great design touches that really improve the user experience. As laptops get thinner and thinner, it can get uncomfortable to type on. But here, when the screen is opened, it will raise the keyboard at an angle which will make it more comfortable for extended hours of keyboard use.

The keyboard is laid out well, and the touchpad is nice and responsive. The Full HD screen is absolutely gorgeous, with beautiful bright colors and sharp definition. The touchscreen is nice and responsive, too. Intel Core i5 4200U and integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 will do great for most everyday tasks. We appreciate the fast wake time of less than 3 seconds. While the system performance is decent, only casual games should be played on this machine. The battery life is decent and will easily last through a workday.  The Sony Vaio SV-P1321WSNB is a great choice for those looking for a well built ultraportable with great looks for light to moderate tasks.

The Sony Vaio Pro 13 is available at an MRP of Rs. 74,990 which may feel steep for a Core i5 system, but we feel it’s a decent price point considering what is on offer: fast performance, great battery life, light weight, responsive keyboard and touchscreen. Sure we would have loved a larger capacity SSD and a less noisy fan when all cores kick in, but the advantages easily overpower these minor niggles. If you are a business user or someone who wants a light Ultrabook with a great battery life, the Sony Vaio Pro 13 is a great option.
