Samsung SmartThings Station: Smart Home hub with Qi wireless charging support leaks online
Samsung has certified what appears to be a new smart home hub with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), possibly as a successor to the SmartThings Hub. For context, while Samsung launched the SmartThings Hub in 2018, it has since pivoted the SmartThings service away from needing a dedicated hub. Instead, Galaxy smartphones and tablets now serve as SmartThings hubs via the SmartThings app.
However, the FCC has revealed that 'EP-P9500' is the 'SmartThings Station', a prototype of which we have embedded below. Surprisingly, the SmartThings Station lacks Matter standard support, although Bluetooth Low Energy, WiFi 5 and Zigbee connectivity options are present. Based on the photo below, the SmartThings Station is a flat black slab with rounded corners, much like a modern tablet.
The SmartThings Station may serve as a wireless charger too, with Samsung opting to make it Qi-compatible. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen how Samsung will tie all these features together, nor when the SmartThings Station will be available. The FCC published documentation about the SmartThings Station around the same time as it did for the Galaxy S23 series though, so we would not rule out an early 2023 release alongside the likes of the Galaxy S23 Ultra at this stage.
