As a wrap up, the Samsung SF310 is not a bad machine. It’s just improperly advertised an targeted. If looking for a thin and light laptop and ending getting this Samsung, you’ll for sure be disappointed. However, if on the market for a stylish looking and pretty solid built 13.3 inch notebook, with good performances and battery life, all for an affordable price, the Samsung SF310 might just end up to be the one for you.

The issues above, coupled with the high price tag and the recent release of the second generation of Core i5/i7 chips from Intel, seem to conspire to work against an otherwise beautiful and well thought-out laptop. Not a howler by any means, but just not good enough.

Usability is also top-notch. The bright 13.3-inch screen features a 1366 x 768 720p screen resolution, so technically HD, which makes the best of photos and films. A very shiny screen coating causes distracting reflections in bright light, however, so not great for the garden.

Great design and good performance, but the SF310 is let down by a poor touchpad and an average display.

The Samung SF310 first hit the news back in September, when Lily Allen supposedly swapped her hacked MacBook for it. Slick PR opportunism aside, the £750 laptop certainly has its charms, not least of which is its interesting design. The 13.3-inch Samsung SF310 has a unique design and offers decent performance, but we don't think it does quite enough to justify its relatively high asking price.

Relatively versatile and powerful while maintaining good battery life, Samsung's SF310 offers an attractive and unique design but is let down somewhat by average ergonomics.

The Samsung SF310 is the kind of compromise we’re happy to make. You could certainly improve on it (and not just with a touchpad that didn't jump around like a nervous cat). Nvidia's Optimus graphics do an excellent job of combining power and power efficiency, the Core i5 is a workhorse processor and we like the fast startup. There are more powerful systems, there are notebooks with a better screen or sound system, there are ultraportables with longer battery life - but there aren't many notebooks with this combination of style, performance and battery life at this price

The SF310 comes with impressive specifications and an excellent keyboard, but is ultimately let down by a fiddly trackpad. With a weight over 2kg and a battery that can't be swapped out, it is unlikely to endear itself to the business traveller

Although the Samsung SF310 notebook appears largely unexceptionable when it comes to styling, display and peripherals, it nevertheless packs a sizeable CPU punch, and its dual role graphics system and good battery life will ensure it finds plenty of friends.

For $729, the Samsung SF310 provides an attractive design, a comfortable keyboard, and relatively strong processing and graphics muscle for the price. The only real drawbacks are the somewhat flaky clickpad and the fact that it doesn't last as long on a charge as some competing 13-inch notebooks. If those are potential issues for you, the ASUS U31JG-A1 may fit the bill with its longer battery life and comparable performance, though it costs $85 more. Otherwise, we recommend the SF310, as it looks, feels, and performs like a more expensive notebook.

13.3: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC and some subnotebooks have tinier displays. Nevertheless, the majority of standard laptops has a higher format. The advantage of a small display is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
