If you want something more modest, the Samsung RV720 offers a 17.3-inch screen to help you enjoy movies and TV shows without having to cash in your pension fund. If you're after a desktop replacement laptop that will display your movies well, then the RV720 is a great choice.

Samsung calls its Essential range "reliable, sturdy and powerful" and we'd tend to agree. The RV720 is proof that budget notebooks don't have to look and feel cheap. There are certainly missing features, but there aren't many 17-inch Core i3 systems that can match the RV720 for build quality with this low a pricetag.

The Samsung RV720 is a very capable machine, and those looking for a general purpose PC to use at home won't do much better for the money. There's not a spectacular amount of performance, but it will handle most jobs including creative tasks such as photo or video editing, and it's only gaming that is more of a no-no.

The Samsung RV720 is a large unit at 40x28x2.5cm, more importantly the viewable screen is 38x21.5cm giving the diagonal imperial measurement of a tad over 17inches. Finally I think some manufacturers are listening when people moan about the black surrounds showing fingermarks.

Though its connectivity and specifications are nothing to get excited about, its solid build, decent battery life, excellent design and great usability - along with a totally bargain price - ensure that this Samsung is one of the best 17.3in laptops going if you’re on a budget. In fact, it has very few rivals for around £400, meaning it comes thoroughly recommended.

If you've been hunting for a desktop replacement machine to entertain you and your family at home, the Samsung RV720 is well worth considering. The excellent performance and crisp, colourful 17.3-inch screen are highlights, although the lack of dedicated graphics is a shame.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.1 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card (650/1100MHz).

17.3": Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
