Reviews for the Samsung R700-A003UK

The Samsung R700 isn't the most powerful notebook in its market but for less than £700 there is plenty to recommend it. We found it powerful and versatile to use, especially the keyboard and screen, which are both of the highest quality. Overall, this is a great machine for any family with mixed needs and a rather limited budget.

Though the R700 is by no means feature rich or high performance, it has all the right features and good enough performance to make it a very attractive proposition at this price. A capacious 250GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM means it ticks along nicely, while HDMI output isn't a luxury you won't find on too many "budget" notebooks. Its decent battery performance is just the icing on the cake and an excellent keyboard and deceptively slim design add further to its value and appeal.

A maximum battery life of just over three hours is another bonus, although again this notebook is likely to be plugged in much of the time. The Samsung R700 is a quality desktop replacement notebook housed in an equally impressive chassis. It’s certainly capable of impressive general purpose performance, but those after a portable gaming machine need to look elsewhere.

Samsung already has the budget laptops market sewn up with the deliciously priced £399 Samsung R60. The Samsung R700-A003UK is a rather different animal, filling in the gaps inevitably left by the R60's budget price tag. The Samsung R700-A003UK is an excellent laptop for the money. The screen's large, the processor is fast and the drive options are vast. With a laptop like this available, why would you want to look any further?

It all adds up to a very well-put together laptop, with a great screen and a sense of style that belies its low price. As long as portability isn't high on your list of priorities the R700 is a fine choice. A great 17in screen, healthy performance and attractive styling for under £500 make this a laptop worth shouting about.

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS: NVidia GeForce 8400M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7400 for laptops and technologically a slower 8400M GT video card (because of the smaller 64 Bit memory bus).
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T5450: » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
17.10": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
3.2 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
Samsung: Samsung Group is the largest South Korean conglomerate and was founded in 1938. Samsung Group employed 489,000 people in 2014 and is one of the world's largest companies in terms of revenue and market strength. The name Samsung means "Three Stars" in Korean and represents the three sons of the company's founder. The company was founded in 1938 as a grocery store. With its subsidiary Samsung Electronics, founded in 1969, Samsung took up the production of electrotechnical items, focusing on consumer electronics and household appliances at an early stage. Other branches in which the large corporation is active include mechanical engineering, automobiles (Hyundai), insurance, wholesale, real estate and leisure. Samsung manufactures a wide range of electronic products, including smartphones, televisions, home appliances and semiconductors. The company's Galaxy line of smartphones is one of the most popular in the world. Samsung is also a major player in the semiconductor industry, making memory chips and processors for many other electronics manufacturers.
83.13%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
