Softly spoken. This 10-inch Pine Trail netbook from Samsung turns out to be a solid all-rounder. Though not green as promised, its ergonomic design, battery life and keyboard are quick to impress. Surprisingly, its Duracase surfaces stayed very cool despite the fan making almost no sound at all. If you are looking for the latest technology in an uncompromisingly good netbook, this could be the one for you.

We like the Samsung N220's built-in 3G wireless broadband capabilities, but its impressive design will also win its fair share of fans, as will its excellent battery life.

The Samsung N220 is a 10.1in netbook with built in 3G mobile broadband access; it's the successor to the Samsung NC10. Sold directly through Optus and bundled with a wireless broadband connection, the N220 is well built, offering a comfortable keyboard and adequate performance for a netbook. We like the Samsung N220's built-in 3G wireless broadband capabilities, but its impressive design will also win its fair share of fans, as will its excellent battery life.

Samsung's N220 is a new netbook being launched into Australia through Optus, with 3G broadband built-in. Overall, we found the N220 to be a more than suitable netbook, especially with its in-built 3G mobile broadband and the option of monthly pricing plans from carriers like Optus. We especially liked the comfortable keyboard and the responsiveness of the trackpad, as well as the whole build quality.

Identical to the N210, the Samsung N220 outdoes previous Samsung models. It is one of the best netbooks on the market thanks to its battery life and excellent ease-of-use. A sure bet but the screen and audio could be of better quality. The NC10 only outdoes it in terms of pricing, for the rest it's beaten.

With all of the hullabaloo surrounding the new Pine Trail platform from Intel, I had high hopes for what the Samsung N220 netbook could offer over its predecessors and competitors. Ironically enough, it actually scored lower on benchmarks compared to Eee PCs powered by Atom N280 processors. That’s pretty disappointing for the N220 and possibly other Pine Trail equipped netbooks.

With the launch of its new ‘Pine Trail’ platform late last year, it became clear that Intel wasn’t interested in upping the performance of its Atom processors too much. Instead, these new chips simply offered improved power consumption at the same 1.6GHz (or thereabouts) clock speed, plus a smaller size for more compact portables — helped in part by the incorporation of the graphics controller into the processor package. The N220 is another excellent netbook from Samsung but new design aside, it doesn’t offer anything that can’t be found in cheaper models and it’s a pity that the new Atom N450 processor doesn’t offer better performance.

Ever since Samsung released its first netbook in 2008 - it was the NC1005PE10 - it’s been churning out new models like there’s no tomorrow. And with the recent arrival of Intel’s second-gen Atom 'Pine Trail' platform, it’s no surprise Samsung has taken the opportunity to get some new netbooks to market. Samsung's netbook uses Intel's second-gen Atom processor to boost battery life.

Samsung: The Samsung Group is composed of numerous international businesses, all united under the Samsung brand in South Korea. The meaning of the Korean word Samsung is "tristar" or "three stars". The Samsung brand is one of the most important brands of South Korea. Samsung is an international notebook manufacturer of medium size according market shares and reviews.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Integrated (shared memory) graphics card in the intel Atom N4xx CPUs. Minimally faster than an old GMA 950 and therefore not suited for 3D games or HD videos (only MPEG2 acceleration).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).
N450:
Intel Atom CPU for Netbooks with integrated memory controller and GMA 3150 GPU. The performance of the system should be only minimally faster than the previous Atom N280 / GMA 950 combination.
10.1: The netbook/subnotebook has a quite small display format. Nonetheless, it is a common format for netbooks. The advantage is, that the subnotebook/netbook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display has the advantage, that it needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes. It is difficult to use high resolutions.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.28 kg:
This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist only few sub-notebooks, which weight less. 10 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
1.4 kg:
79.27%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
