Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy A80
650 Euros (~$730) is a lot of money. With the Galaxy A80, Samsung delivers a high-end smartphone with a rotating camera and a front without a notch for this amount. Let's see whether the A80 offers sufficient value for the high price.

While the A80 is a very likeable and premium looking phone, though it’s a mid-range handset. The rotating camera is a clever way to maximize the gorgeous display which is one of its strongest features, making it an ideal companion for those who often watch videos and films on their phones.

Let’s do a quick rundown of what the Galaxy A80 can offer: an immersive screen, an upper mid-range chipset, large RAM and storage, and the main feature – the triple flipping cameras. And for all of that, Samsung is charging a quite hefty PHP 34,990 price tag. That’s almost flagship territory. It would have been easier to accept it had features like faster storage type, wireless charging, stereo speakers, an IP rating, or a 3.5mm audio port. Heck, it doesn’t even have a case included in the package.

To be fair the Galaxy A80 counters with a gorgeous display, high build quality, decent all-round performance, amazing battery life, and a polished user interface. Compared to its immediate competition, it feels like a more polished and well-thought-out product, even if there are some compromises and it is missing some features. For readers shopping in this segment, the Samsung Galaxy A80 is worth considering if you appreciate a large display and appreciate a more polished look and feel than the Chinese competition.

Samsung always designs something innovative and the Galaxy A80 is a good example of it. The phone is equipped with the great features, a premium design, a rotating camera and a large 6.7-inch Infinity Display. With the rotating camera mechanism, it seems Samsung has taken a different route of innovation. In terms of performance, the A80 better fits the bill. However, with many phones offering better specs on paper, the price of the phone could be a sole reason to choose something else.

The Galaxy A80 brings to the table a large and vibrant display, decent performance and a novel pop-up camera that offers good performance for a midrange phone though the daunting price tag means that you’re paying a premium for its distinctive design.

An overengineered smartphone by Samsung. It's a nice concept - and it surely works. I am impressed by how well Samsung brought the concept device into the market. Of course, there is room for improvement as well - like the inclusion of a headphone jack.

The Samsung Galaxy A80, then, is a quirky phone with a very obvious selling point. The camera on it is decent, and the brand has made it so that you can use the same one for both front-facing and rear-facing shots. Again, it’s camera is not the best I’ve used to date. As mentioned near the start of the article, it takes some decent pictures for a mid-range phone of its level, so you’ll be fine if that’s all you want.

The Galaxy A80 may be a phone with a beautiful screen that’s almost as big as the device itself thanks to the very small bezels, but it’s let down by its camera system. The Galaxy A80 is smoother and faster than the Galaxy A70 thanks to the Snapdragon 730, but if it weren’t for that fancy rotating camera, the A80 would just have been a Galaxy A70 Plus.

The Galaxy A80 offers a lot of new technologies that you won't find on any other Galaxy phone right now. Unfortunately, not all of them are worth praising. The rotating camera, while unique, feels slow and raises a lot of questions regarding its durability. The Asus 6Z offers a better solution, in my opinion, by allowing you to control the motorised camera. That being said, the New Infinity display is a stunner as it offers an edge-to-edge, notchless screen that is immersive for media consumption.

Samsung is taking an exciting direction with the New Infinity design on the Galaxy A80. Apart from dual-screen phones, its rotating camera is the only “all-screen” construction that lets you take selfies with the superior rear camera.

Beyond the fun rotating pop-up camera, and the high-quality notchless screen you get as a result, the Samsung Galaxy A80 doesn't have too many impressive features, and verges on irritating to use at times.

The Galaxy A80 will be available from 6th July at selected telco operators, major electronics and IT Stores, as well as authorized mobile retailers, Samsung Experience stores and on Samsung's official Lazada online store. Thankfully, all three colors are available - Ghost White, Angel Gold, and Phantom Black - and will retail for a recommended price of S$898. For those who purchase the Samsung Galaxy A80 at the Samsung Experience Store, you will also receive an exclusive Samsung Galaxy Friends x BLACKPINK merchandise set worth $188 while stocks last. It comprises of a Galaxy A80 phone cover, a smart charging stand and a set of BLACKPINK photo cards. If you're not looking to splurge close to S$900, you may want to consider Samsung's next Galaxy A-series model down the line-up, the Galaxy A70 at S$498, which also boasts a massive screen, triple rear cameras, and an even larger battery pack.

For all the wow factor the Galaxy A80 undeniably possesses thanks to its unique camera and bezelless display, it's a really tough sell once reason gets in the way. At its launch price it's placed against proper flagships which come with benefits like superior performance, extra camera, better battery life - some are even more affordable than the A80. We could have seen ourselves ending with something along the lines of 'get the Galaxy A80 if you want a selfie camera like no other, but otherwise look elsewhere'. The thing is though, the selfie camera like no other is to be found on the Asus Zenfone 6, and for less money. The Galaxy A80 is a novel take on the flip camera, an interim step until under-display cameras become a thing, a proof of concept maybe. It's not a phone you buy, not at full retail price, or at least not based on rationality.

I really like the massive full-screen, notchless display of the A80 and the pop-up camera mechanism that enables it. I also like that the rotating camera lets you have a better quality front camera than you would normally find on an upper mid-range phone.

After playing with the A80 for little over an hour it seems like Samsung is using it as testing ground for new features it might eventually deem worthy enough of gracing its flagship line with. The rotating camera is a cool idea and including things like Super Fast charging and a ToF 3D sensor make me think they were odd omissions on the S10, especially as it's meant to be the brand's hero device.

Samsung's Galaxy A event in Italy is now behind us, but the best bit is yet to come - our hands-on time with the Galaxy A80, of course! A slider, a swivel triple camera, notch-free bezel-less screen, and more - there are so many things to see in the new Galaxy A80. But if this is too much for you, then you might be interested into the more ordinary Galaxy A70.

Once we know pricing it’ll be easier to judge whether the Galaxy A80 is worth a look. If it comes in around £500 then it’ll be a great deal compared to the Galaxy S10, but it will also cost the same as the OnePlus 6T or Honor View 20.

In an effort to take on the increased competition from the Chinese smartphone makers, including Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, Samsung has been on a reinvention spree this year with its smartphone lineups. Samsung started the year with its India-first Galaxy M series of phones in January, followed by a refreshed Galaxy A-series in February. The South Korean consumer electronics giant clearly doesn't seem to want to leave any stone unturned in an effort to make its smartphones ready for both the consumers and the competition, as evident by the launch fo the brand new Galaxy A80. Set to lead the company's revamped Galaxy A-series, the Samsung Galaxy A80 brings a number of firsts for Samsung. We managed to spend some time with the phone ahead of the company's launch event in Bangkok on Wednesday, and here are our first impressions.

The Samsung Galaxy A80 has an interesting design that delivers a refreshing change to the norm and we like that about it. We aren't convinced the automatic slider mechanism won't have its issues down the line, but we certainly like the idea of the rotating camera and the huge 6.7-inch uninterrupted display is lovely.

Meet Samsung’s most innovative phone to date: the Galaxy A80. Built with a pop-up module with a rotating camera, the new mid-range phone is the most unique device we’ve seen from the brand in a good, long while. Samsung is making good on its promise to put all new tech in mid-range devices first before they go on their flagship phones, all in the quest to give their struggling mid-range lineup a boost against its Chinese rivals.

Don't be put off by the pop-up, rotating camera gimmick. It's fun to use, but the Samsung Galaxy A80 looks to be much more than just a one-trick pony.

The Galaxy A80 managed to impress me in the short time I had with it and I can’t wait to test it out more thoroughly. The pop-up camera and rotating mechanism makes it feel quite special, and features like super fast charging, a display with no notch and extremely small bezels, the latest software, and 8GB of RAM further enhance the package.

Model: The Infinity-O displays on Samsung’s flagship devices and the Infinity-U displays or Samsung’s Galaxy A series did take off successfully but there was just one problem with them, they weren’t really all display screens. While the quest for truly full-screen devices continues, the current closest adaptation is the pop-up camera setup. This has been adapted by various other manufacturers including OnePlus, Oppo, Asus and Vivo. One might think that Samsung would adapt this to their flagship range, but they didn’t. The Samsung Galaxy A80 is the first to feature a truly all display look on the front. Samsung managed this by including a unique rotating camera that quickly rotates from the back to the front to be used as a selfie camera. For a start, the front is a true beauty with very tiny bezels on all sides. The only noticeable part is its massive 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, which looks stunning and because it takes up almost all of the front, the screen-to-body ration is at 85.8 percent, not exactly infinity but really close. The display comes with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,400 pixels giving it a pixel density of 393 ppi. The entire front is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and the back is covered with Gorilla Glass 6. The edges are all made of aluminum. Samsung was so dedicated to making its bezels small that it even included a piezo earpiece that vibrates under the display. According to initial reviews, the earpiece works fine. The fingerprint sensor is also placed under the display like on the S10 series.
As for other specs, the phone comes with a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 CPU coupled with an Adreno 618 GPU. It has 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Its storage can’t be expanded because there is no card slot. This might also be due to its already massive size and heavy weight. At 220 grams, the phone is already too heavy and big for the pocket and Samsung had to try and save as much space as they can. This is also evident in the earphone jack’s removal. It took some time, but finally Samsung is also joining the anti 3.5 mm earphone jack group. As for that unique rotating camera, it features a triple camera setup with a 48 MP wide camera, an 8 MP ultra-wide camera and a Time of Flight 3D sensor to capture lighting details. There is also an LED flash and the camera can shoot videos in 4K resolution. The beauty of the rotating mechanism allows the same setup to be used as for the front facing camera. This means that the Galaxy A80 has a better selfie camera setup than even the top of the line Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. As for the speaker, it performs quite well but there is nothing special about it. Other specs include Bluetooth 5.0, a 3,700 mAh battery, which is suspected to be not good enough for that massive display, and fast charging via USB Type-C. The A80 might be an interesting device from Samsung but for almost the same price, the OnePlus 7 can offer much more in terms of specs and performance. There are others too such as the Xiaomi Mi 9. In fact, for a lower price, the S10e might be a better choice for those who are looking for a flagship level smartphone.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.

75.06%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
