Water-resistant. The Galaxy A5 series now enters the third round and has to keep its ground when fighting in the strong mid-range. More power, bigger storage, and water and dust protection are to help here. The test will show whether this will suffice.

A really fantastic phone for the price, with excellent design and build, and has some of the best battery life on the market.

This is an extremely compelling little smartphone, it seems perfectly priced and specced for its niche; to slot in the market where there are people prepared to throw down a few hundred pounds for quality, but who don’t want to bother with more phone than they need at the considerably higher prices flagships command.

Samsung galaxy A5 (2017) scores on pretty much everything, except of course the processor. It sports a stunning design, great front and back cameras, and offers an average battery life. Galaxy A5 (2017) shouldn’t disappoint you if you are a regular user and do not play a lot of games of watch a lot of videos on your device. Coming to options in the same price-range, there’s OnePlus 3T which runs Snapdragon 821, Oppo F3 Plus which you can consider.

As ever, the OnePlus 3T looms large in this mid-range territory, and this remains the top choice if you’re after all-out speed. (Also note that, if you’re desperate for Android 7, you’ll have to wait for an over-the-air update “coming soon”.) Still, there’s so much to like about the A5 that it deserves our Recommended award. It’s waterproof for up to 30 minutes (it has an IP68 rating), you can expand the 32GB of storage by 256GB via the microSD slot, and it’s stylish. Even if it doesn’t quite usurp the OnePlus 3T, its long battery life alone may convince you to buy.

Galaxy A5 (2017) is a model that slightly exceeds the mid range but this is completely explicable. The smartphone impressed us in the first place with its design which closely resembles that of the flagship Galaxy S lineup. However, the other features are also at the desired high level. A Super AMOLED Full HD display is available and it includes a number of useful modes and features. In fact, Galaxy A5 (2017) is packed with a lot of useful software features so you can often use them. The battery life is also impressive with a capacity of 3000mAh but it definitely performed amazingly in our endurance tests.

I’m in two minds about the Samsung Galaxy A5. On the one hand, Samsung Pay and IP68 certification are really nice. On the other hand, the OnePlus 3T offers dramatically more performance for the same price.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is indeed a worthy successor with beautiful build quality, snappy performance, good camera. Even though it has few flaws, the positives in this mobile will overpower this for sure. But what hurts here is the price point. At Rs. 28,990, this is definitely costly and on the other hand, you will get flagship grade smartphones including OnePlus 3T and others from Chinese OEMs with powerful specifications at much cheaper cost.

Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 is a very good handset, it is 7.9mm thick, comfortable to use, powerful and does not heat-up. Battery life is very good. Camera quality is average but there is scope of improvement.

There’s not a single element that can be pointed out as ‘inferior’, in the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). The smartphone is built well, looks premium, offers a good display, a neatly organised interface, and a pretty decent camera. The performance is decent for lightweight usage, and barring load times, is usable under heavy load too. Battery stamina paints a similar picture - while it is not really extensive, the Galaxy A5 will still last you through an entire work day.

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S7 is in the process of being replaced by the S8, those who always wanted an S7 need not worry. The Samsung Galaxy A5 is, I believe, something like ninety per cent of an S7, at much less than ninety per cent of its price.

The Galaxy A5 is a great-looking, great-performing mid-ranger, with plenty of features you’d normally have to pay the big bucks for. Water resistance and USB Type-C really do make the difference, even if camera quality might not be quite up to scratch for the cash.

Priced at Rs 28,990 and Rs 33,490, the Galaxy A5 (2017) and A7 (2017) seems to be a tad bit expensive but you get Samsung’s goodwill along with it. While we surely have a stiff competition in this price bracket, both the Galaxy A5 and A7 (2017) look promising. The IP68 certification is definitely a plus and Samsung’s long successful run in camera and display department is expected to continue here as well. But, this is not our final verdict. Stay tuned to our reviews about the smartphones for in-depth analysis.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 is an excellent midranger with a combination of Samsung flagship features you won’t find in any other Samsung phone in the market. It ticks all the boxes with great design, IP68 water resistance and other flagship features but isn’t the equal in terms of performance or camera for a full-fledged Samsung flagship like the Galaxy S7 or S7 edge. With Samsung Pay it can even be used as an electronic wallet. Initially priced at RM1699 and now at RM1499 it isn’t nearly as expensive as a full-fledged Samsung flagship either, making it the perfect choice for the trendy young adult who brings his or her phone everywhere.

If, however, you’re someone who isn’t particularly bothered with a smartphone’s camera, then the Galaxy A5 should definitely be on your shortlist. I was genuinely impressed with this phone’s overall performance. The fact that Samsung added water resistance is just a really sweet cherry on top of an already delicious cupcake.

All things considered, the Galaxy A5 (2017) is not a bad phone. It’s a very, very good phone. Get it if you truly care about long battery life, the feature-rich interface and excellent keyboard typing experience. Get it for the looks. For all else, other phones are priced more fairly and offer more bang for the buck.

It's so good to see Samsung back on form with a classy, well-rounded handset that'll appeal to younger consumers in particular. The mid-range seems like a hard territory to nail, with the budget manufacturers owning the lower end and the big brands converging on the higher - but this is a strong play from Samsung.

It’s not a perfect mid-range phone, but it consistently hits all the key notes you’d want a device in its class to, and it does so very well. It also does an excellent job of distilling down some of the main draws of the Galaxy S7 flagship, so if you’re looking for a similar experience by way of a premium design, fingerprint sensor and IP68 certification without the same price tag, then the 2017 revision of the A5 certainly delivers.

For a phone that costs less than £400, the Galaxy A5 is impressive in its design and build. Even its display and performance punch beyond that price point. In many ways it's a cheaper version of the Galaxy S7, except it doesn't really feel cheap at all when you pick it up. It's solid and quite beautiful.

The Galaxy A5 2017 is a fantastic mid-range phone, with the looks of a flagship and some decent performance and all-round specs. Our only real concern is that Samsung is pricing itself out the market, with just a small difference in price separating this and the Galaxy S7 - we like the new Galaxy A5, but we'd choose the higher-spec Galaxy S7 every time.

Those numbers can easily be countered with a few others that ring much more nicely, but let's not get so hung up on the digits. The facts are that the Galaxy A5 (2017) is beautifully-built; it will live through a downpour; it packs a screen that's only bested by flagships, and has battery life to spare. Of course, it's not ideal, and it's not cheap, but you're also unlikely to find a better match for the description in the previous sentence. Well, not unless you dig even deeper into your pocket.

In fact, the only compromise we can see at this stage is in its Full HD 5.2-inch screen when higher resolutions are fairly widespread. But the display is still sharp and vibrant, so we doubt many will notice or care.

Model: Early reviews have been favorable on the 2017 version of the Samsung Galaxy A5. On first sight, it did not vary much in terms of its design from its predecessor. It features a full metal unibody design which makes this phone look neat, premium and makes it durable; nevertheless, its shiny back panel makes this device a fingerprint magnet. It is also water and dustproof up to IP68 specification and this allows users to immerse it in up to 1.5 m of water for up to half an hour. This will certainly protect the device against the usual liquid damage. One handed operation is a breeze as it weighs a mere 157 g. Its dimensions measure at 146.1 x 71.4 x 7.9 mm; thus making this phone comfortable to the grip. For display, it is fitted with a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution (at 424 ppi pixel density). Though it is meant to be a lower-end device in Samsung’s smartphone series, its display quality is somewhat close enough to the real deal – the Galaxy S series. It is also sheathed with Corning Gorilla Glass for additional protection. Colors appear bright and crisp.
For a mid-range smartphone, it specification is good as it is powered by an Exynos 7880 processor with a Mali-T830MP3 GPU. Photos and and video streams are way beyond average and it is more than capable of handling everyday tasks. There are 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage on board. The storage capacity can be expanded by up to 256 GB. On the camera's front, both front and rear facing cameras are 16 MP with f/1.9 aperture. This makes capturing images reliable and detailed with good color accuracy. The f/1.9 aperture is wide and helps in low-light performance. It comes with a reasonably large, non-removable 3000 mAh battery, which delivers a long battery life thanks to an efficient CPU. On top of that, it is paired with the USB Type C port for fast charging. Charging to 100% usually takes just under 90 minutes. The device comes with Samsung Pay, which allows users to shop and pay with a simple tap. The Galaxy A5 supports dual SIM, which provides greater flexibility when travelling. It comes in four color variants i.e. black sky, gold sand, peach cloud and blue mist and is pre-installed with Android 6.01 Marshmallow. It is nice that there is a fingerprint sensor onboard. For those not needing the high-end features of the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy A5 migt be the device to go for.

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.
