HD Tune 2.10
The test of the transfer rates of the hard disk brought the following results:
minimum 3.3 MB/Sekunde
maximum 33.4 MB/Sekunde
average 26.0 MB/Sekunde
access time 16.8 ms
burst rate 77.1 MB/Sekunde
CPU load 7,2%
Particularly the 3D bench mark test shows the borders of a ATI X700 grafics card clearly. The Pentium M750 with 1,86 Ghz cannot change anything.
The X700 meanwhile already joins behind numerous faster cards, in our comparison of mobile graphics cards, in the class 2.
Current Games are possible, but one has to be somewhat tolerant with the graphics settings. Nevertheless this combination is suitable for office- and multimedia-applications, not least due to the fast DDR2 533Mhz RAM, in the best case to 2 GB. The X700 offers a good mixture from current consumption and performance.
The test of the color representation shows a particularly strong deviation of the blue curve and a falsified representation of a rather warm color spectrum resulting from it.
The point of view stability of the display is good, whereby this rather is limited by arising reflections than by the luminosity and/or distortion of the colors.

Scope of supply
Also pleasing was an exact view into the transportation cardboard: beside various audio and video adapters, driver and software CD's, a remote maintenance, an external antenna for the TV receipt... also a headset and notebook-bag are provided.
DVB-T Tuner / Audio
The Asus W2Vc offers an integrated digital DVB t tuner and so allows the receiving of digital TV programs. Additionally there is still another traditional TV tuner is in the notebook.
In connection with that 17"WSXGA display with a screen diagonal of considerable 43,3 cm and integrated 5,1 channel stereo sound with subwoofer, a perfect television pleasure should be no problem.
Particularly the loudspeaker system is outstanding good. Good sound, and the - for a notebook - perfect basses are pleasing.
In the test we could measure a volume of 79,0 DB with still good sound rendition. 83.4 dB was maximally possible. Even then one could not complain about the sound.
There is only one recognizable disadvantage: the keyboard is placed somewhat too far in the rear part of the case. By the fact it is possible that one touches with the wrists at the front edge of the equipment. With particularly long writing this could prove as unpleasant. Decisive however is the seating position of the user.
Case
Friends of good Design will have joy - the Asus W2Vc offers good workmanship and high-quality materials. Even if some will contradict me now, but according to my opinion it is one of the few laptops at the notebook-market, which has been created by the designer by a clear understandable concept through from beginning to the end.
result
No doubt the Asus W2Vc can be called a high-quality laptop, which however has its weaknesses. These are to be found particularly within the noise emissions as well as the display.
The performance of the Asus W2Vc is sufficient for all office and moderate graphics applications. Also current games are playable with adapted resolutions.
Concerning the noise emissions of the laptop I assume that some patches and updates will be distributed in order to fix these problems. The display is not as brightas other tested 17 inch screens, but the point of view stability and particularly the resolution is quite ok.
Asus offers a "ZeroBrightDot" warranty. That means full replacement in the case of one bright disturbing pixel error.
Particularly to emphasize are the multimedia qualities of the W2Vc. An digital TV tuner, outstanding sound system with subwoofer, infrared interface, Bluetooth...also the 3,4kg weight with included battery are top for a 17" laptop.
The Asus W2Vc can be recommended for office- and multimedia-users, who want quality and therefore are ready to spend somewhat more moneys.
battery runtime
Due to the large display and the middle class video card the Asus W2Vc does not reach peak values, which however are not demanded with a laptop of that size.
mode: super performance, full load: 1 hours 36 minutes
mode: email/office, normal load: 3 hours 12 minutes
current consumption (super performance)
min: 37.1 watts
idle: 44.1 watts
max: 69.3 watts
performance
The performance was tested with maximum performance adjustments (Power4Gear).
Doom 3
Time demo demo1 supplied the following results with different details and resolutions:
Low: 82,5 fps
Medium: 81,6 fps
High: 57,5 fps
Ultra: 24,0 fps
In the case of a resolution of 800x600 the game was playable, but there occured now and then interruptions.
Quake 3 Arena
The time demo bench mark (Four.DM_68) resulted in 296.3 fps. This already aged game is to be played in highest settings absolutely without interruptions.
emissions
Already after first switching on the constantly running exhaust is noticeable. All the same whether no load or perhaps somewhat more power demand, the ventilator practically constantly with an enerving volume of 43,9 dB.
The temperature measurement points out that even under full load almost no heating up can be recognized. Thereby the permanent running of the ventilator becomes the more incomprehensible...
Possibly this will be fixed by an additional tool or in addition, a bios update.
Under full load a stepless winding up to approximately 47.2 dB is to be heard.
The DVD drive assembly is problematic too. When playing a DVD by the use of the provided software (Asus mobile theatre) the drive assembly constantly turns on a high number of revolutions and causes thereby sound emissions with approximately 51.4 dB. This is inacceptable when viewing films. Only an additional tool can create remedy. (CD brake)
Volume
idle: 43.9 dB
load: 47.2 dB
DVD drive assembly: 51.4 dB
display
The Asus W2Vc got a reflecting 17 inch WSXGA "Color Shine Glare type" LCD display. This has a maximum resolution of 1680x1050 pixel and a maximally measured brightness of 134,0 cd/m². Compared with our other tested 17" laptop this is a rather modest value. The illumination amounts to average 79,4%.
input devices
The touchpad, the indicator lights at the left side and also the additional keys at the right side are integrated harmoniously in the aluminum cover.
As special keys an internet key, email key, bluetooth on/off , touchpad on/off as well as a "Power4Gear" key for selecting different current savings modes are offered.
The pressure point of all keys feels pleasant and clear. The keyboard unit is cleanly implemented and no wobbling can be ovserved.
Even the touchpad-keys, which are implemented in the aluminum cover can be pressed comfortably and give a sensitive feedback by a clear pressure point.
Both, the hand rest area and the display cover, which are most stressed parts of a notebooks, are implemented in coated aluminum. This grants a particularly high scratching and wear firmness.
The display can be adjusted well, but when moving there occured a few cracking noises.
The closure system gets along without hooks and catches automatically.
The offered interfaces are well positioned, whereby it is to be pointed out that 3 USB ports, a VGA exit and the exhaust are on the right side. This is disturbing for righthanded people (cables, warm air flow).
Nice Gadget: S-video and antenna connection as well as RJ-11 and RJ-45 sockets are hidden at the left chassis side behind a magnetically closing flap.
Review Asus W2Vc
"mobile digital home", so the name addition of the Asus W1 and W2 series. That is completely right. Mobile - despite the 17" WSXGA display and large dimensions - remains the Asus W2 pleasantly mobile. Digital Home - with the integrated DVB-T-tuner you can get digital TV on your mobile computer.
