Takes a licking. Panasonic's Toughpad FZ-M1 is an extremely robust 7-inch Windows 8.1 tablet. The Core i5 processor is cooled passively, which prevents continuous top-notch performance.

Panasonic's Toughpad-series consists of very robust tablets which are able to withstand most falls and are not affected much by dust and humidity. The series targets professional users; home users will likely lose interest immediately upon seeing the model's price. Our review tablet is the 7-inch model Touchpad FZ-M1. If the slate is a good choice is the subject of our review.

Our database doesn't contain any true competitors, so the tablets listed in the various tables below can't be considered to be equal to the FZ-M1 in any way. We only use them to evaluate the performance of the Panasonic Toughpad.

Case & Connectivity

With dimensions of 203 mm x 132 mm x 18 mm, the Toughbook is quite bulky - but that's a necessary compromise on has to accept when purchasing a fully-ruggedized tablet. The chassis is made out of plastic. While the back and front sport a silver-gray color, all other parts are black. The back of the unit allows for further expansion: our review slate shipped with a barcode as well as a SmartCard reader, but Panasonic's website also mentions an Ethernet and a serial port as options.

The right side is home to a flap which hides an audio combo-jack and an USB 3.0 port. The MicroSD card reader and the SIM card slot are located behind a hatch in the battery compartment. The LTE modem allows the user to connect to a cellular network to access the Internet or the company office. The battery can be removed using a lever - additional tools are not needed. The bottom houses a docking port which can connect to various optional docking stations designed for specific usage-scenarios.

The OS is Windows 8.1 Professional (64 Bit), although a downgrade to Windows 7 Professional (64 Bit) is possible as well. Recovery media is not included, but the pre-installed tool "Recovery Disk Creation" allows the user to create a recovery disk.

Input Devices

The Toughpad is equipped with a capacitive touchscreen which can recognize 10 inputs simultaneously. The touchscreen reacts quickly and we had no issues with its performance during the review period. Panasonic also includes a stylus, which makes handwritten input much easier.

Display

The Toughpad comes with a matte-reflective 7-inch touchscreen with a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Thanks to the brightness of 528 nits and the contrast ratio of 729:1 the tablet can be used outdoors without caveats. When we used a black background, we noticed light bleeding in several areas around the perimeter.

The DeltaE-deviation is 5.55 as shipped, which is fairly close to the target value (DeltaE less than 3). There is no noticeable bluish hue.

The Toughpad is equipped with an IPS panel and the viewing angle stability is very high as a result. We were able to read the display content from nearly all positions. The tablet can be used outdoors as well as the display is more than bright enough for that task.

Performance

Panasonic doesn't really target home users with the Toughpad - the slate is designed for business applications. Modules allow the user to tailor the FZ-M1 to their needs. Our review tablet is equipped with a SmartCard reader (wirelss) as well as a barcode scanner and sells for about 2000 Euro (~$2195); a stripped-down version with Celeron-N2807 costs 1200 Euro (~$1315).

Discussion

Processor

At the heart of the tablet is Intel's dual-core Core i5-4302Y (Haswell) processor. The "Y" indicates that this particular CPU is very frugal: with a TDP of 11.5, the i5-4302Y is even more of a power-miser than a normal ULV processors (TDP: 15 watts). The Core i5-4302Y processor differs from the otherwise identically-constructed Core i5-4300Y processor in that it has a slightly lower power consumption during normal use. The processor operates at clock frequency of 1.6 GHz, although the Turbo can overclock a single core to 2.3 GHz.

Since the CPU is cooled passively, the performance is not constant and after a few minutes the i5-4302Y is subjected to heavy throttling to prevent it from overheating. We ran the Cinebench R11.5 benchmark test three times in the row: during the first run, the CPU more or less maintained its maximum frequency; during the second run, the speed dropped to 1.2 - 1.3 GHz; during the third run we saw speeds of less than 1 GHz. For this reason, we included breaks during the CPU benchmark tests to allow the CPU to cool down.

System Performance

A fast Solid State Disk makes for a responsive system; in addition, the RAM of the FZ-M1 runs in dual-channel mode. Nonetheless, the results of the PC Mark benchmark tests show the CPU/GPU combination to lag behind behind what should be possible. The culprit is the passive cooling, which doesn't allow the CPU and GPU to operate at their respective maximums. Theoretically, the PC Mark 8 scores should be about 600 - 700 points higher than they are.

Mass Storage

Panasonic utilizes a Solid State Disk from manufacturer Samsung. The M.2 model offers a capacity of 128 GB, which leaves about 100 GB of user-accessible space. The rest is occupied by the OS and the recovery partition. The transfer rates are pretty decent.

GPU Performance

Intel's HD Graphics 4200 handles the graphics duties. The GPU supports DirectX 11 and operates at speeds between 200 - 850 MHz. The results of the 3D benchmark show that the GPU doesn't fully reach its potential. The dual-channel RAM doesn't help here, either. Just like the CPU, the GPU can't maintain its maximum speed since there's no active cooling. We ran 3DMark several times - the third time around, the tablet only managed a score of 179 points.

Occasional gaming is possible but the fun doesn't last long, since the frame rates drop during longer sessions.

The Toughpad handles our stress test (Prime95 and Furmark in parallel for at least one hour) the same no matter if the device is plugged or running on battery power: after a few seconds, the processor speed drops to 600 MHz and the GPU to 150 MHz. Despite the lower core speeds, we measured temperatures in excess of 50 degrees C in some areas. This result is not really surprising, since the chassis is rather thick and bulky and lacks cooling slots.

Speakers

The single speaker is located on the left side on the back. The overall sound quality is actually better than we would have expected. Of course, the bass is lacking and the sound is muffled somewhat, since there are no openings for the sound to pass through. Nonetheless we have encountered plenty of tablets (as well as notebooks) which sounded worse.

Power Consumption

The Toughpad is equipped with a frugal processor, so the low power consumption of much less than 10 watts during idle shouldn't come as much of a surprise. During the stress test, we recorded a power consumption of only 12.5 watts. The reason: both the CPU and the GPU are subject to throttling.

Battery Life

Our relevant WLAN test simulates browsing conditions. We activate the "balanced" profile and set they display to a brightness of 150 nits. The Toughpad shut down after 4 hours and 6 minutes.

The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 is a tablet for professionals. Various modules allow the user to adapt the slate for different applications. One of the options is a serial port, which is still used in some professional scenarios. Since the chassis is very sturdy, even occasional falls won't harm it. Despite the fact that the FZ-M1 is equipped with a Core i5 CPU, it hasn't been designed for power-hungry applications, since the passive (and therefore silent) cooling causes throttling after a few minutes of load. Panasonic might as well consider a Core M-processor for a potential successor. The IPS display is very bright and allows the use in various environments. The tablet doesn't post very long run times, but Panasonic offers a second battery with about twice the capacity of the base model.

All things considered, the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 is a tablet which can handle the tasks it was designed without major problems.
